I think I got it all across in the title but I can't post a blank message for some reason.

The 9-cell battery should be compatible, at least that is what Lenovo's official battery options webpage said. The 6-cell on the other hand looks extremely similar, but I have no idea if it fits.

This is an interesting question indeed. The 9-cell is basically 6-cell + something extra, so if the 9-cell fits, the 6-cell should fit; however it will not be properly flush with the chassis, because T60 has straight angled back, Z60m has a curved back. But I never actually tried; for all I know Lenovo may have a "clever" stupid trick to prevent the battery from fitting.

The 9 cells are the same batts. The 6 cells are different and don't fit in each other.

This has been my experience as well.

This is the definitive answer (emphasis by me).

Six cell batteriers for Type B models are all interchangeable, however, the Type B six cell battery design is unique and will not fit in the Type A models.

In addition to being rounded at the back to match the shape of the machine (as opposed to squared off), the Type B six cell battery is notched on the side so that it won't fit in the Type A machines. The reverse is also true, the Type A six cell battery won't slide into the Type B machines.

All that being said, the nine cell batteries are completely interchangeable among all the models Type A and Type B. They are keyed to fit in all models listed. And, since they extend an inch past the back of each machine, matching the shape of the machine is not an issue.

Technically, the batteries are probably interchangeable, however, as I wrote, they are definitely keyed for specific machines, Z-series or otherwise. Of course, a Dremel could fix that.

Regarding generic, non-Lenovo parts, it is possible that the six cell units are keyed or notched to be used in any model, as are the Lenovo nine cell units. However, caveat emptor.

So, as suspected, it's a matter of keying. 9-cells are like a "master key" that will fit any lock, 6-cells are keyed for specific "locks" (Z6x series vs others). If one is determined, I do not doubt that this mechanism can be defeated, but the battery will still not be flush with the case.

Side view comparison of the locks.

Just need an exacto knife to trim out the extra heights from the tall keys to match the short keys.

Now how do I put a T410 battery into an X60?
