Thinkpad R61e 7649-AL6

#1 Post by solidus1983 » Wed Oct 17, 2018 7:46 am

Hello everyone i am new to this site so if this is the wrong place i apologize in advance. I was given a Lenovo Thinkpad R61e to which i have now upgraded most of it.

Intel T9500
2x 2GB DDRII So-DIMMS
120GB SSD WD-Green (Might go 256/512GB yet not sure)
Atheros Wifi (AR5BXB92)

With new battery on the way, now i was wondering if the screen could be upgraded from its current WXGA 1280x800 to something higher.
This model has no Trackpad (Which is great) but also seems to not have the WWAN either on the board (No Biggy) it runs on the Intel IGP Think its the X3100.

Now this is just a little project for me so when i have spare dosh i would get parts for it kinda thing.
I know i will be needing a new CPU Fan and i am also looking for a ODD module as well.

So mainly i am after upgrading the screen.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

To upgrade the display you will need to get a WSXGA+ cable. See this page: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/migr-69708

There are a number of different WSXGA+ cables for the 15.4" R61 and R500 as R is the budget series and some money is saved for IBM / Lenovo by deleting features from common configurations.

93P4548 LCD Cable WSXGA+
93P4549 LCD cable WSXGA+ with Bluetooth
93P4550 LCD cable WSXGA+ with integrated camera
93P4551 LCD cable WSXGA+ with integrated camera and Bluetooth

Any one of those will enable the use of WSXGA+ and WUXGA screens. :thumbs-UP:

Thank you for the quick reply, Will have a look once i have finished admiring the build quality of these systems, they was built to last even if it was the budget version that's for sure. Even the screen hinge is done correctly.

So basically i will need the 93P4549 LCD cable WSXGA+ with Bluetooth (as my casing doesn't have hole for webcam but having bluetooth would be nice)

Also the screen section has 3 Wires Black, Grey (Which is for Wifi) but there is also a white one is this for a WWAN connection?

Where do you think the best place is to get the cable very much doubt Lenovo will still stock them.

The white one is a second aux antenna for some models of Wireless card with three antennas, like Intel 4965AGN (Santa Rosa), 5300 (Montevina), and 6300 (Calpella). There are also Atheros 3 antenna offerings. With a whitelist removed BIOS the R61 can use any wireless card easily even Wireless AC. But if your current chip works fine, there is no need to replace it.

Very handy to know that so i can look for a 3T3R Atheros based Wireless card along the lines of QCA9880.

Thanks, might have to hold it off one of the screw holes for the CPU/GPU just snapped off guess i am going to have to hunt down the mag frame for the thinkpad R61e, as it seems it was on the brittle side.

So i am trying to epoxy for now as a temp fix (I know not ideal)

So thats a P/N 44C0512 on the way now too.

EDIT: @RealBlackStuff just looked on your post about screens and you said
You'll notice the two metal brackets on top, and the inverter below that panel.
Those need to be cut off (the upper two "shortened" to ca. 3mm is OK) without twisting the metal edge around the screen.
Does this include the inverter as well ?

If it does, surely CCFL would require that inverter?

That's where Dell puts their inverter, in the ThinkPad you will reuse the ThinkPad's inverter.

Thanks for info.

Edit: Well thats the new Middle frame installed as well as battery.

Only a 480GB SSD 8GB of DDRII to go plus screen with cable.

@RealBlackStuff @TPFanatic Looking on Ebay right now for screens they seem expensive didn't expect the screens to be over £120 like they are, any other places i can get them from?
