Cleaning an A30 - disassembly instructions?

#1 Post by mgeller142 » Mon Jul 04, 2005 5:18 pm

I am sure this exists somewhere - are there instructions on taking apart my A30, so I can clean out the insides? It's running really hot, and I'll bet it just needs to be cleaned out. Are there disassembly instructions posted anywhere?

Thanks in advance.

Go to the IBM Support site:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... country=us ,
put in your model number and search for the Hardware Maintenance Manual.

Now, I have a ThinkPad i in the basement that I purchased in 1998. It was used most days of the week until early 2005. I took it apart to replace the hard drive and it was not particularly dirty inside. That particular machine ran hot from day 1. So don't get your expectations up unless you have some reason to believe it is very dirty inside.

As soon as I get a new Thinkpad, first thing that I do is D/L in .pdf, the HMM. ( Hardware Maintenance Manual ) from the IBM site.

Very nice manual. Has all instructions needed to work in the guts of your TP.

More importantly, clean the fan and heat pipes with copious quantities of canned air. Also, while you have the unit apart, get some Arctic Silver (or similar) and renew the paste that's presently between the fan and CPU. The stuff IBM used when the A30 was built has a tendency to dry out, shrink and stop providing a heat transfer source.
