A31 Issue

#1 Post by punF » Wed Jul 06, 2005 11:04 am

Hi all!

Excuse please my bad english :)
I have a Thinkpad A31 notebook, and now it´s dead.
It used to work great until one day, my WinXP flashed a death blue screen complaining something about _IRQ. Then the A31 started to reboot by hersekf (yeah for me my notebook is a nice pretty female) often until one day it never turned on again. I tooked it to IBM Tech Support, the warranty is no longer more active. They told me a system board replacement was necessary and the charge for it were $850. I don´t have that money right now. After leaving IBM Tech Support facilities I tried to turn on the A31 and it worked for a day, then the A31 died again.
Anyone has happened trought this before? Any suggestion?

Thanks in advanced, my best regards.

Hello PunF,

it is difficult to judge from Your description ..., but for a start, I should think IBM is right, You may well have a failing motherboard (i. e. failing power-section). It may also be that the built in batteries (bios-, system-backup-akku, standard battery) do fail.

In case You manage to start Your NB once again, try IBM's system diagnosis (PC-Doctor) in order to find out, whether there are different or further problems.

Use ebay in order to find an appropriate systemboard to do the repair yourself. All the Info You need on how to take Your notebook down and build it up again You'll find on IBM's website (Hardware Maintenance Manual (September 2003) - ThinkPad A30/p, A31/p). All You need besides the spare part(s) are a set of new screws, so You'll build up Your NB following IBM's standards.

Good Luck
