IBM ThinkPad A31 display intermittent problem.

#1 Post by driftersimo » Fri Mar 13, 2020 8:00 pm

good evening everyone, I'm Simone and I write from Italy.

I recently purchased an IBM ThinkPad A31 on ebay. Bargain price (6 euros plus shipping).

The problem is that not always, but most of the time the screen has lines of different colors on the whole surface.

I turn it off, close it and then turn it on again, this problem disappears.

What can it be due to? Defective screen? GPU defective? During transport did you get a violent blow?

Sorry for my English, but I'm Italian. Just relax

Welcome to the forum!

My best guess would be a defective GPU.

Good luck.

Is it a A31 with 14.1" LCD (identify it with GIANT bezels)? If so, you are looking at some really, really low quality Samsung panels that look like crap compared to a 600's TFT display anyways.
In that case, if your problem is one of:
a) horizontal lines near the top and bottom of the LCD
b) the entire screen glitching out
then lucky you, you just have a dead LCD. In that case you might as well replace the LCD cable and bezel at the same time so you can have a far better 15" SXGA+ or UXGA display.
My A30 had problem a) with 14.1" Samsung LCD and I can confirm this did the trick.
HOWEVER, if your problem is garbled text, vertical lines that are evenly spaced out of the display and/or graphical artifacts, then unfortunately your motherboard is shot.
