CPU and heat question ....
CPU and heat question ....
Hi,
I just bought a new, never used open-box A21M 2628-GSU Thinkpad with Win 98SE installed from the original IBM recovery cd. All I have installed additionally is Avast anti-virus and a couple of programs. My Thinkpad has only 64mb ram installed (from factory) but I have ordered a couple of sticks totalling 512mb ram. I will install as soon as I get them. Anyway, I've found that when "at rest" the CPU hovers between 75 - 80% and when I do web browsing, the CPU may go up to 100% but then go back to about 75-80 again. Also the bottom gets quite warm. Is this normal and would extra 512mb ram help here or ..... ? Any advice/help will be appreciated.

What are you using to measure CPU? There really isn't a good CPU meter in Windows 98SE out of the box.
IIRC, those older machines ran hot doing nothing because they were using standard CPU's in a confined space.
I have a Windows 98SE machine running in the background here, and as close as I can tell, the CPU is not busy. Resource meter says that resources are mostly free. System monitor says that Kernel Processor usage is low.
Perhaps try uninstalling the Anti-Virus software temporarily and any other programs you installed to see if they are the culprit.
Finally, consider seriously upgrading the machine to at least Windows 2000 - Windows 98 is a poor choice for an OS today. (It was a poor choice when it first came out, but that is another story).

Hi, thanks for your prompt reply .... I heavily EDITED my original question so perhaps you could reread .... I'm using one of the programs that came with the laptop, PC Doctor and also RamBooster that also states CPU levels, which are in sync to the PC Doctor. Yes, I should upgrade to Win 2000 but I called IBM and thy said they won't sell me their original 2000 recovery cds with all the drivers, applications etc .....jdhurst wrote:What are you using to measure CPU?
