Thinkpad R60e - F11 not working
Thinkpad R60e - F11 not working
Hello,
My Thinkpad doesn't have a recovery enviroment working.
In Bios there's an option saying "Secure, Normal, Disable". And talks about a pre-desktop area.
I think the R60e has a Hidden Protected Area and not the Recovery and Restore partition. But I am not sure, anyone know?
I found this article in the wiki: https://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Predesktop_Area
https://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Hidden_Protected_Area
But I couldn't find which setup the R60e is supposed to have.
Does anyone know where I can get the Recovery CD to restore de hard drive and get the recovery pre desktop area working?
I am doing this just for the "joy" of having a factory like Thinkpad, I know about XP not being safe.

XP is still perfectly safe and running on my numerous devices
As for recovery: take a glimpse or as around on forums' marketplace. You should have no real issues getting it.

Hi,
Sadly I didn't see the R60e or the R60 listed there. Are there models close to this one in characteristics?
In the meantime I download and installed "Rescue and Recovery" from the lenovo website.
It did install a program, that I can access on Windows XP. And a boot time version of it seems to be available if I press the ThinkVantage button at boot time,
This boot time version however does not contain a image of the factory instalation, and it does not make use of the Pre Desktop Area or settings in the bios.
So it doesn't use a reserved partition to work.
Also installing that version did not change or created any partitions in the hard drive. So it does install some boot time rescue tool, but it's in the same partition as Windows XP. And it does not offer the option to recover to factory state.
For what I understand the Hidden Protected Area is a part of the HDD that is hidden from the operating system. Windows or Others, and can only be called upon by the BIOS at boot time.
The Rescue and Recovery would use a Recovery Partition, that can be seen by the OS, but uses special flags to indicate it is a recovery partition. Although you can use partitioning tool to reclaim the space. Or delete it during windows installation.
I would like to restore the hidden protected area and see how that works.
I took a look in the market place. There's a topic there ("Recovery Set Repository") I think that's what you meant.

T60 XP would work perfectly.
But read the Notice first in that Repository thread.

Hi,
Thank you, yes I read the notice on that page.
My Thinkpad T60e has windows XP Home Edition. Would it work if I tried the Windows XP Pro? Is it possible to replace Pro for Home?
I couldn't find any factory images on the topic containing windows Home.

Yes, that would work also, but only if you replace Home with Pro.
You can't upgrade that.
