Any working 15" A30's left?

#1 Post by fatkatsupra1 » Thu Oct 01, 2020 7:27 pm

I have been waiting for a 15" xga screen a30 to come up for sale and they never do! Are they all dead? :(

My A30p is not dead, but it's not healthy either. It has an UXGA display, but because of a faulty graphics chip, it will not display at full resolution nor work at all with a graphics driver installed. Only works with Windows default graphics or VESA on Linux.
Collection = T430 - T500 - R400 - X300 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - R61 (15" SXGA+) - T60 - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P

Have a A20m that was finicky on power on for the longest time after purchase but powers up fine. Maybe the A line just doesn't have longevity in its bones :?

The youngest A series laptop is 17 years old at this point. Seeing a working one is in many respects like observing a brontosaurus chilling in your back yard.

Well I have one A30 converted to A30p with a 15" UXGA display and a brand new motherboard. I have to put copper shims on the graphics chip to make it touch the heatsink so it can rid of the heat.
I remembered seeing a lot of them on eBay just 2 months ago on eBay. Hmm...
What aspects of an A30 are you looking to get btw that you would not consider a A22p, A31 or T23 for?

Well remember that the ThinkPad A series were either the cheap laptops or the really expensive workstation laptops. The m series were the low end versions often packing even less power than their T2x counterparts and the p series were the high end stuff packing the most amount of performance you can get at the time. This is not just an IBM thing because Dell played around with the same idea with the Inspiron 2500, which is a really, really watered down Latitude C800.
As a result of either low end components or high power draw components, along with the bulk of the machines, they just simply don't last as long, especially if it is well used.
I have a ThinkPad 770ED that died because those don't age well either in terms of motherboard lifespan.

Probably sounds dumb but I am looking for the fastest 15" XGA Thinkpad that originally shipped with win98 and included wifi! lol

Basically an A30 2652-4cu...

As for longevity, I have 760e, 765 and 770 that run like tops. Win95 is as responsive as win10 lol.

Okay yeah good luck with that because A30's that came with wifi are EXTREMELY rare! It's usually only the A30p systems that come with wifi! I have not seen such a A30 or A31 with wifi on eBay for years!
And on these ThinkPads, the models with wifi has the antenna permenantly fixed onto the lid so you can't just get a A30 system with no wifi and plant one (unless you wanna hijack some antenna in and get some crappy signal reception)!
And if you want to downgrade the screen resolution of an A30p you need to buy the screen and the ribbon cable! The 15" screen A30 uses have the connector much higher up and the ribbon cable do NOT reach the connector of the 15" T4x or R5x screens!
This all in all will cost you minimum hundreds of dollars

Have you ever tried that out? I had a good experience with shoehorning random antennas in where they shouldn't be, but not with an A30.

I took the wireless antennas from an R51 and placed it into my R32, which came from the factory without the antennas installed. If I can recall it right, the antenna's plastic 'vents' being missing, didn't affect the signal reception that much. It was a lot better than having no antennas installed, too.

Well it also depends on what wifi cards you use. In my experience many ThinkPad OEM cards do not like it when you only have one antenna working, and jamming two wifi antennae and make sure both of them work well is much harder.

FWIW, if you find an A3x lid with antennae, it will fit any A3x chassis - which do sport some differences between A30 and A31

All the A3x stuff that got thrown out when I moved 5 years ago... :banghead:

Also I am wondering why do you want the fastest machine that originally shipped with Win98? Something like a A31 or T30 didn't ship with Win98 but works just fine under Win98!
As we go to the Pentium M machines though, getting Win98 to work on those are far more of a chore and I suppose you should avoid those too if you want the best experience under Win98.
Also on a side note the A30 series do NOT have sound blaster compatibility at all, not even software based, if that's what you are after in Windows 98.
While the SXGA+ and UXGA screens might be really tiny under Windows 98, many SXGA+ screens and all UXGA screens have the Flexview which gives far better display quality. You might wanna consider that too.
