Does it really take 11 days, 16 hours, 10 minutes?

Does it really take 11 days, 16 hours, 10 minutes?

#1 Post by MikalE » Wed Oct 07, 2020 3:12 pm

For an XP Pro backup to an SSD???

I can't imagine it taking this long, but that is what XP Pro is telling me while the backup is progressing.

The only sizeable file on this system is my iTunes library which is about 10 GB or so. Photos are about 2 GB and there is not much else on the system besides a few smaller documents.

It didn't say anything about creating a system image, but I hope it's doing that too. It's been so long since I fooled with XP I can't really remember how long this takes.

Down to 10 days and 22 hours now.

Hi,
What model is the laptop ? What SW are you using? Or are you using windows back up? Is this an internal SSD or an external one ? If external How is it connected ? Is it from an internal HDD to a second internal SSD? If you have only one SSD and you are backing up the OS , what option did you choose on (windows)back up screen? Also how many partitions you have on that internal SSD if its one only?
I can't imagine a back up taking that long say for a 20GB max?

At this point it would be faster to just save my important folders to the SSD and forget the backup. I have an XP Pro disc.

I'm not really doing anything with it right now so I*ll let it run until tomorrow. I think once it gets through the iTunes library it will speed up.

If not I'll abort it.

Ah yes, usb 2.0 limitation 60MB/s ,pentium 4 don't look good, eventhough you have maxed the ram to 2GB, it will be slow.
However , there is no way it should take 10 hrs. no more than 2-3 hrs i would guess.
Why not (as you said) get what you need to your SSD than reinstall XP fresh and than take an image afterwards with macrium reflect? Than you can get your files back .
Actually it would be better just to clone your fresh XP Pro to your SSD ,swap your internal HDD with SSD, Create two partitions in SSD (backup/image), and put the fresh install image and backup but install XP on 3rd partition..

Sure. I'll just plug a SATA drive right into the IDE bay. No problem.

If we're talking about native ports and not a PCMCIA card, A31p is actually USB 1.1

If I remember correctly it took nearly 24 hours to back up a T30 to a USB 1.1 external HDD. The T30 had less than 100GB but more than 30GB used.

I used Acronis TrueImage 2011, which is probably light years faster than winblows backup. If you don't have TI, you can get older versions for a lot less than current versions sell for. TI 11 served me very well until the USB HDDs grew to over 2GB, so now I'm using TI 2020 but still have my TI 9, TI 11 and TI 2016 around.

I thought that it was a ludicrously long time, so I never did that again. I went to the Dock II and put the source drive in the T30 Ultrabay, the target drive in the primary bay and the boot CD in the Dock II's Ultrabay. Back in 2011-2012 I posted a lot about these experiences here and in the old Acronis forum. I will not try to back up within windows unless it is an absolute emergency, which I don't foresee occurring.

Just an aside, Copying from an internal HDD to a NAS HDD 900GB takes days, even over a 1Gb wired connection

Why not take that internal drive out and put it in an external USB case or in a HDD-caddy?
Attach that to a fast(er) machine, should speed up things quite a bit.
And get a program like FastCopy.
It's an older program, but works like a charm.

Mostly out of interest: A31p, what kind of HDD interface do they have? Is it IDE? How do you guys run SSD-s in them?

On the subject: would Clonezilla be a suitable tool to copy drives around once you have them somehow attached to a faster computer?

It was still running at midnight last night. I aborted the backup.

I won't be doing that again.

Hi, ultrabay as second SSD is an option but gains are slim as discussed.
some good info on this old post answered by realblackstuff and others.

Well I admittedly haven't done one in quite awhile, when I used to backup my A31p systems I would install an Ultrabay HD caddy in one of the bays and use Ghost 2003 to clone the drive. Boot Ghost from a floppy (A31p was on a docking station with an external floppy connected) and go disk-to-disk. Much faster but requires the necessary hardware. But then again I'm using PATA drives in both cases and not an SSD.

I have copies of the drivers and copies of the files that are on the A31p. I also have an XP Pro disc with service pack 3. I'm just going to forget about backing up this system.

Sure was nostalgic to hear that floppy drive formatting a floppy though.
