does the Ultrabay Enhanced Battery exist?
there is this strange looking part in the second edition of the 15.4" R61/R61e/R61i's HMM, "Ultrabay Enhanced battery (2nd bay battery)" FRU 40U4890. what is this? a typo? i've been looking around and there's no clear indication if it's real or it's just a mistake in the HMM.
could anyone verify if this part actually exists? i need to update the ThinkWiki's ultrabay devices section, and this part's making it difficult.

Re: does the Ultrabay Enhanced Battery exist?
Yes. It does exist. I've owned one many years ago.
Finding one - let alone in any type of decent working condition - is a whole different subject matter.

I think there are knockoff clones over on aliexpress but can not vouch for their worthiness.

Re: does the Ultrabay Enhanced Battery exist?
excellent, but do you happen to recall the FRU and ASM part numbers of the battery? i'd like to know the part numbers, and maybe even the battery's voltage and amperage if possible.
do you also happen to recall the battery's compatibility, as in which models accepted it? e.g. R5x or R6x/Z6x, or R6x/Z6x/R400/R500? any details regarding this would be very appreciated.
i've never seen an Ultrabay Enhanced battery on aliexpress, but i did manage to find some Ultrabay Slim batteries... could you link me an example if possible? i'd like to have a look at it, worthy or not worthy.Shredder11 wrote: ↑Sat Nov 07, 2020 2:37 pmI think there are knockoff clones over on aliexpress but can not vouch for their worthiness.

I had it in a widescreen R61 of *some* kind. As for anything else, no idea.do you also happen to recall the battery's compatibility, as in which models accepted it? e.g. R5x or R6x/Z6x, or R6x/Z6x/R400/R500? any details regarding this would be very appreciated.

Re: does the Ultrabay Enhanced Battery exist?
That's an Ultrabay Slim battery. This one is quite common. It fits both Slim and Enhanced Ultrabays, which makes it compatible with all of the above.Shredder11 wrote: ↑Sat Nov 07, 2020 7:17 pmFor Lenovo T400,T400S,T410S,T420S T430ST500,R400,R500,W500,

The alleged Ultrabay Enhanced (12.7mm) version - FRU 40U4890 - indeed seems very elusive. I find no reference to it anywhere except the aforementioned 15.4" R61/R61e/R61i's HMM, no pictures anywhere, nowhere for sale. It is as obscure as ThreeIguanasPerSecond said, and if not ajkula66's testimony, I wouldn't be sure it actually exists.

Re: does the Ultrabay Enhanced Battery exist?
It doesn't exist.
The hardware maintenance manual that you have referenced from, is an outdated edition. The latest edition that I am aware of, is the 6th edition and it does not contain an entry for the 'Ultrabay Enhanced battery'. The only two editions that I'm aware of which contained this strange entry was the 1st and the 2nd edition. The 1st edition however, identified this part as the 'Ultrabay Enhanced battery (2nd bay battery)' with an FRU of 40Y6790. Notice the different and older FRU code, which points to the Advanced Ultrabay Battery's FRU code.
In the 2nd edition, the FRU code was incorrectly changed to 40U4890. It was supposed to be 41U4890 to reflect the newer FRU for the Advanced Ultrabay Battery, but for whatever reason, the 1 in the FRU was mistakenly swapped with a 0. Now that's cleared up, I'll move on to the dumb idea of calling the Advanced Ultrabay Battery or the original Ultrabay Slim battery as the 'Ultrabay Enhanced battery'.
If you had relentlessly searched through IBM's many announcements related to ThinkPads, you'll notice that they have at least once or twice, identified the Ultrabay Slim PATA HDD adapter as the 'Ultrabay Enhanced HDD adapter'. I'm not kidding about this. Seeing as they did that for the HDD adapter, I wouldn't be surprised if they decided to do the same for the Ultrabay battery packs. Which sigh, caused a lot of unnecessary confusion.

Re: does the Ultrabay Enhanced Battery exist?
Oh but it does. The fact that something looks like a unicorn from a distance doesn't necessarily make it one.
I'll give you that I was very surprised when that R61 arrived from fleabay with the said battery in the bay. But arrive it did.
There's a lot of stuff around that doesn't match and/or exist in HMMs and PSREFs but does so IRL. It's always been that way in my experience.

Re: does the Ultrabay Enhanced Battery exist?
Ah, alright then. I suppose that basing my observations from the hardware maintenance manuals were pointless if that's the case.
Re: does the Ultrabay Enhanced Battery exist?
Far from it. HMMs and PSREFs are an excellent resource but there's always stuff that's missing. It's just the nature of the beast.

Re: does the Ultrabay Enhanced Battery exist?
I bought one of these for my R60 and seem to recall it being at less than 50% of capacity after six months. The bay battery always discharges first, so it wears quickly. I say you're better off buying the larger battery as it doesn't degrade near as fast and sticks out the back, which makes for a convenient handle.
