Waking up from sleep issue in Windows 7

#1 Post by ibrazhko » Sat Jan 09, 2021 6:14 am

I am running Windows 7 on my R40, and overall it runs very well. But when I want to wake my laptop from sleep, I have to do the procedure twice. When I press the power button the laptop awakes, but only for 5 seconds or so, after which it automatically goes to sleep again. Then I press the power button again I finally the laptop awakes completely.

Has anyone experiences this? T30, T40 users with Windows 7 maybe? Would appreciate any suggestions.

Hi you can try checking your power plans and setting them back to defaults, check to see if you have wake up from sleep settings in bios , and update bios, or use mouse of keyboard for wake up. does this happen both on Ac and battery? This is sleep but not hibernation right ?
to check devices for wake up/ open command prompt as Admin/powercfg -devicequery wake_armed/enter , see which devices allow wake up (probably theese will be mouse, keyboard and Lan card) and go to their settings and enable this device to wake computer from sleep/ under power management.
to reset power plans/ open command prompt as Admin/powercfg -restoredefaultschemes/enter
Go here and check your drivers , especially your chipset, graphics, ultranav and ibm power management./ run in Win7compatibility mode if needed.
Check all your Win7 updates , also try to replicate the problem by plugging in a USB mouse and use it to to wake up from sleep/
Once done get back and we can see what else can be done.

If you use R40 in Windows 7, make sure you are using either a modded version of driver or a driver designed for Radeon 9000.
AFAIK, a standard mobility Radeon 7500 driver causes bluescreen in Windows 7 whenever certain shadows are drawn, and a standard mobility Radeon 7000 driver will give you lots of problems when you resume from sleep.
I have had these issues on my A30p and T42 in Windows 7, one uses Radeon 7000 and the other using 7500.

Thanks for the suggestion. But I am already using a slightly modified Vista driver for my ATI Mobility Radeon 7500, which is mentioned in this thread. This driver is very reliable, haven't had any issues with it.

Thanks man. All the drivers and BIOS are up to date, and there are no issues with the power plan. What I did is I uninstalled "Lenovo PM device" from the device manager, and the problem disappeared. I think it's because the offered PM driver isn't optimal for such an old system, for which Windows 7 was never intended. (I should mention that the driver was offered by Windows Updates.) However, uninstalling Lenovo PM device didn't come without drawbacks: there is an "unknown device" in the device manager now, and when I wake my laptop from sleep the CD drive doesn't work. I guess it's the CD drive that was causing my problem with double-wake from sleep in the first place. When I wake up the computer from sleep the first time, all the devices wake up too, except for the CD drive. The computer goes to sleep again, and only after I wake it up the second time it wakes up completely, including the CD drive.

So, the problem isn't solved so far. I reinstalled Lenovo PM device and I will try find another solution. But any advice on how to address this issue with CD drive not waking up from sleep is appreciated.

I don't remember exactly, but I think the CD drive implementation isn't fully power management-compliant on this system generation - it may not properly support hot-plug. I know, for example, that this limitation exists in my A31p. Now, if somehow sleep/wake cycle translates into hot-plug on newer OSes, this can lead to such issues...

Yes your original problem might indeed be your cd drive, is this the original drive or has it been swapped ? To replicate and to find indeed the problem is your cd drive , take it out/unplug or disable from device manager /bios and than with power manager installed check if problem persists.
Have a look at "Optical Disc Drive Firmware Update Utility" from previous support link, also there is a way to check both programs & drivers to run under compatibility mode. You may check to see if you can run Lenovo PM under compatibility mode, see this article scroll down for "Using Compatibility Mode to Resolve Driver problems "

I have seen this power management driver specificly for your model listed under downloads ,but for Win2000/ XP only, maybe try to run it under Win7 ?
"IBM Power management driver special package for Windows 2000/XP - ThinkPad General Version : 1.25.01 25 Feb 2004"
Have a look at this, mind you this is not a driver specific to your model

Sorry for a late reply, but what you said seems to be exactly to the point. But do you have any idea how this issue can be resolved?

Since I never had Win7 on such an old system (my A31p is running XP), I wouldn't know for sure.

Did you verify that this is indeed the cause? For example, if you manually disable the optical drive, does the computer sleep and wake up correctly?

Maybe try REMOVING the optical drive and see if things improve.
While my A30p and A31p (briefly) have no issues in Windows 7, oddly enough some fixed CD-RW burner drives that come with some models of Latitude C810 and C840 prevents Windows 7 from starting up! Like it tries to access the drive when starting up and the drive does not respond until I eject the tray! Also burning/erasing doesn't work in Windows 7 either - the Windows explorer crashes when you try to erase/burn, while it works just fine under Windows XP and with a 3rd party utility.
I also updated the firmware of the drive, no change.
