What is the maximum hard drive space for a r40?

2.5" PATA/IDE drives are available up to max. 320GB.
But I would recommend the 160GB 5400 rpm Samsung HM160HC, they are by far the best HDD for that type (and cheap as well).

No, SATA drives don't work in R40.

The Western Digital Scorpio series is also SATA isn't it? You need an IDE drive for the R40 like RBS recommended.

Send me a PM if interested. I have a couple of these drives in new open box condition that I'm probably not going to use, so can send you one.

PATA IDE connection is what you need, and it does look like there were some older Scorpio series of that nature. So, if that is what the drive has, then sure it would work.

You could probably use the SATA Ultrabay HD caddy in the R40, but there would be extra cost for the adapter and performance would be no better, and perhaps even worse, than using a Samsung HM160HC in the main drive bay.

On second thought, that may not be a good idea because the R40 has an Ultrabay Plus slot and the SATA adapter is only available in Ultrabay Slim (like a T40, etc.) so not a good fit.
