today i discover that my cdrw device is not display in "my computer" anymore. first i thought it was winxp so i took a winxp and restart the computer and see if it boots. But it doesn't!

the wierd thing is verything seems normal, i can open it,the green light is lit, and when i put the cds it will spin as is know there is cd in the device. But how come the cdrw is gone in winxp and can't read the cds??

R40 CDRW really dead

#2 Post by ToMie1981 » Sun Jul 17, 2005 2:55 am

I had once the same problem,

it started with the CDRW disappearing in BIOS and WIN XP

i tried to pull out the CDRW and insert it again it helped only once

i tried the CDRW in another Thinkpad and it worked, but this was useless for me, other CDRW worked in my Thinkpad

the problem was like just my CDRW and my Thinkpad didnt want to work together anymore

i sent it in to IBM repair and they replaced the motherboard now it works again, seems for me like this is your only chance :-(

I had the same problem with my ultrabase and X40. The CDRW drive wan't recognized in BIOS or anywhere...but I managed to exchange it for another brand new X40. This happened TWO times.

CDRW unrecognizable

I work for a school that uses the IBM Thinkpad R40s. We've had at least 5 R40s with this same problem. Each of them have been fixed by sending the unit in to the IBM Depot where the system board is replaced. Some of their techs think that just swapping the CDRW module will work. In those instances we have had to send it back in for the system board replacement.

One day I called up IBM and chatted it up with this great guy older gentleman named Art. He told me the sure-fire way to troubleshoot the problem. In the Start menu go to All Programs(but it's not really all of them) -> PC Doctor for Windows -> PC Doctor. This is (as Art said) the tell-all program for the Thinkpads. I've looked on our R51s and R52s, it's on there too. If your CDRW is not listed under the Storage section in PC Doctor, the system board isn't recognizing it.

Call up IBM Depot to get it repaired. That is, if you were smart and purchased the $300, 3-year warranty.
