I had two G40 and currently one G41, which has the same IDE hard drive interface etc. I have a 128GB mSATA SSD inside a IDE caddy adapter and that runs great, although not in full DMA 5 mode speed so only 30MB/s approx instead of 80+ like on my T43p for example. The SSD drive was from aliexpress for £15 and the adapter was £5.

X61 (C2D T7500, 3GB, 250GB SSD, BCM70015)
X61s (2GB, 120GB SSD)
T43p (P M 760, 2GB, IBM Port Replicator II, 128GB SSD)
G41 (P4 3.46GHz, 2GB, 128GB SSD)

Max IDE laptop drive for these (and all other laptops) was 320GB. Much more common are 100, 120, 160, or 250 GB.

If you look REAL HARD, you Might be able to find an aftermarket hdd adapter that converts a SATA drive to IDE for the ultrabay. But they sort of left the party several years ago. the primary drive however must be IDE.
