R60 modding to R601

#1 Post by Phil83 » Wed Jul 27, 2022 12:00 pm

Hello,

I have read about modding R60 using a R61 mainboard 42W7822 to install penryn and up to 8 GB ram. Is only this FRU compatible? which other R61 mainboard FRU are plug and play compatible to be installed in my R60 4:3 15" ?

thanks

Regards

Phil

Any board from a 15.0" R61(i), such as one with FRU 44C3810.
Download the Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM) from the link above, search for the planar FRUs.

The HMM link is at the top of every forum-page.
You'll want this HMM: ThinkPad R60, R60e, R61, R61i (14.1 inch and 15 inch standard screens)

Lenovo: X240, X250, T440p, T480, M900 Tiny.

thank you!
I've forgotten that R61 maintenance is the same for R60 I already downloaded. Anyway in that manual I found nothing about R61 overcomnig 3 GB Ram limitatio or penryn support. Are all those fetures available only due to middleton bios? in this way the only difference between a R60 and R61 mainboard is the possibility to install middleton bios isn't it?

best regards

T/R/X-60 are all limited to ~3GB RAM.
The T/R/X-61 all have 64-bit CPUs and a different chipset, which allows all of them to use up to 8GB RAM.
Some of these -61 already natively support Penryn, but all of them will do so after Middleton's BIOS.

thank you for clear explanation, there are no so much info about R60 modding because It was not so famous as T60.

Anyway in the HMM I have found only 42W7822 for R61 15", nothing about the 44C3810 mentioned in a prvious post, are they compatible or the same board?

thanks

44C3810 is just a later version of the 42W7822.
Both IBM and Lenovo never bothered to update their HMMs.

Thanks for clarification. Anyway these boards look quite rare and much overpriced nowadays...

They were abundant on eastern Europe market as they were, at the time, not as premium as T61 - hence cheaper. The time has shown that in terms of reliability and sturdiness R61 was far superior than its "premium" brother.

how can i check if dual IDA mode is activated? I tried to flag "start dual ida" in throttlestop option window but after rebooting the flag disappears. Could you tell me best throttlestop setting for T9300?

Just install the likes of HWinfo and check for D-IDA option (enabled should be in green) and max CPU speed.

I have realised only today that my ultrabay rs232/parallel port adapter, a very important feature imho, cannot work anymore with r61 mainboard due to connector missing on the mainboard itself. anyone know if there might ba a solution for this issue? or if a different R61 15" mainboard could be available to support ultrabay adapter?

The 2504 and 2503 docking stations have the ports. No R61 planar has the connector, but if you checked the schematics you could probably transfer the needed components from a T60/1 planar given sufficient skill.

thanks for reply, I had completely missed this information about R61 since that connector was available in R60 mainboards. I checked a bit some schematic, but I don't know if it's the connector misisng only or also other components.
