Is the G-41 somewhat inferior to the T's?

#1 Post by Ogg » Wed Jul 20, 2005 10:57 pm

Just wondering.. Lenovo seems to be offering the 2881-3au for $879 cdn!

Intel Celeron Processor 2.53GHz
Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Home Edition
256MB Memory
30GB Hard drive
CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo
14" XGA TFT
28813AU $879.00

This is amazing price! I was recently messing around with bids on eBay for T23 (1gigHz) and the price was nearly the same when shipping was added. The G-41 is a much sweeter deal and you get a NEW machine. Used T30's are close to $800 used too.

Is the G-41 somewhat inferior to the T's?

Well, the G series is a desktop replacement. It weighs 8.54 pounds. My last laptop weighed 8 pounds, and that was WAY too much.

The T series is a thin & light that weighs, what, 5 to 5.5 pounds?

You might also look at the R series, which is 5.8+ pounds, and is price-competitive with the low-end G series.

Thank you for pointing out the weight difference! The weight spec isn't mentioned in the tabook.pdf. Actually, none of those spec .pdf's mention weight at all. 8.54lbs would be too heavy for a laptop in the long-run.

Yes, they do. Look for the section with the Dimensions, Weight, Case Material, Battery - Type, Battery - Life.

I probably wouldn't use the term somewhat - vastly inferior is mort accurate.

The G Series rank up in my list close to the first I series as the worst ThinkPads ever.

The G series use Pentium 4-based processors, which are obviously far less efficient than Pentium M's. That's a big reason I wouldn't go for it, unless you need desktop power (and even then Pentium-M's are not that bad a choice.)

I just sold my personal T42 because my company issued me a G41, and a free ThinkPad is the best kind. But it enables to say this:

The T42 is most definitely superior! Not just because of its lighter weight, FlexView screen (optional), and other features...but the keyboard on this G41 is total garbage.

How can you say that the keyboard on a G series is crap! It's not (to me). I used a G series and the keyboard feels good to me. I mean, This is a ThinkPad!
ThinkPads: R51 (1836HAU), T41 (23737FU), 600 (264551U), T60 (2008VRQ), T500 (224255U)

I Love (all) ThinkPads...ThinkPad forever!

hmmm...I have an i Series (currently loaned to my sister) and it's still working five years later. Acer must make really dependable laptops too! The keyboard was especially nice, well, better than my X40, at least.

As for the G series, it looks butt ugly. In comparison, you could say that the i Series looks "beautiful".

The G series does not look ugly! I think that all ThinkPad's look good.

Well, one man's trash is another man's treasure.

I've tried all three keyboards (ALPS, Chicony, and NMB) on my T42 and they were all distinctly superior to the keyboard on my G41, and not just in the feel of the keyboard. Often when I press one of the keys on the left side of the keyboard on my G41, at the bottom of the stroke, I can feel a sudden little extra give or extraneous motion that is obviously not an intended part of the key's motion, and I can hear a sound, like a crack (not really an apt description, but for lack of a better word) that suggests that this keyboard might not be properly installed.

That problem might be unique to my particular laptop; again, though, on its best day, with the depth and tactile feel of the keystroke, the G41's keyboard is not as good as any of the T42 keyboards on their worst day.

I'll have to side with pphilipko on this one...

The G series... butt ugly isn't strong enough. More like fugly.

I do think it's REALLY weird that we've got a ThinkPad fangirl AND a fanboy here!

I like ThinkPads a lot, but I know the limitations of certain models *cough*G series*cough*

Nothing against you, of course, thePCxp. ;-)

I am so disgusted in myself. I didn't notice that section. I guess I got distracted by all the rest of the info on those sheets.
