2 x R50e machines
2 x R50e machines
Hi
I've got 2 x R50e machines. They're almost economically worthless but I feel it's my duty to get them to the best condition and spec possible. Both have smashed screens so I'm putting a Samsung Glossy screen in one (hate them but variety is spice) and an LG-Philips matte in the other.
However. One is an 1834-S9G machine with a crappy Celeron M processor. The other is an 1834-S5G machine with a much more macho Centrino CPU. Does anyone know if both machines have the same socket and if so what CPUs can I safely 'OEM' these up to?
Thanks!

Re: 2 x R50e machines
According to the Psref, Celeron to Pentium should be doable and the Pentium M 735 seems to be the highest CPU.

Yes, they have the same socket, since they're both 1834's.

Re: 2 x R50e machines
I thought I'd try and give this R50e one more crack of the whip. I'd learned recently that these motherboard have various tiny fuses on them, which can blow.
It's totally dead - no power whatsoever. Does anyone know where there are fuses to check on this R50e motherboard? FRU 39T5537
Thanks

Re: 2 x R50e machines
I can only think of 1 fuse that could cause a totally dead machine.
That is the one located near the DC in jack.
Alternately you could try running it on battery or power it through a port replicator / docking station.
If it was me to deal with this, then I would go straight to the MAX1631 chip and measure dc voltages.
Download the datasheet so that you know it's legs.
The DC voltage from the AC Adapter should arrive as input to this chip and it should have 3 dc outputs.
Measuring the input and output voltages to/from this chip will tell you a lot about what to do next.
Also, if there is some short on that mb, then you may be able to identify an area getting hot. You can use your
fingertips to measure temperature. But careful, don't get burned.
