ThinkPad R40 makes screeching noise on bootup.

#1 Post by nanomacguy » Sat Oct 22, 2022 10:18 am

Just recently, my ThinkPad R40 has been making a screeching/grinding noise on boot.

1. Should I be concerned?
2. What part would I need to replace to fix it?

Fan, Floppy/CD-drive or HDD.

The noise doesnt happen on boot anymore, but now the fan only spins up briefly before not spinning until next boot.

Should I replace the fan or is the issure more involved?

Normally the fan spins up briefly at boot time and then only comes on when the CPU gets hot.
If temps are 'normal' there is no need for the fan to spin.
