R60e upgrade potential

#1 Post by astral » Fri Feb 10, 2023 8:47 pm

got one of these and want to install a better res screen in it. XGA isn't enough! to my knowledge many T60 parts are compatible... what should I be looking for here for SXGA+?
does it need a special cable or will the xga cable work? eBay says the T60 and R60 cables are the same but none list what resolutions they work with. sourcing a compatible panel shouldn't be an issue, just gotta find the size and connector type it uses and order one that fits the requirements I'd imagine.

what cpus can it take? mine's got a celery m but they should handle certain core 2 duos right?

XGA and SXGA+ use the same LCD-cable.
RTFM.

The Celeron R60e use a different chipset that the dual core models. There's a good chance you'll brick it if you try a Core 2 Duo. To upgrade you'll need to swap the motherboard with one that uses dual core CPUs.

Well that’s a bit of shame. Good that I could theoretically throw a UXGA FlexView LCD in it
but too bad I’d need to source another whole motherboard for a CPU upgrade… any chance of fitting a faster celeron in there? It’s got a 1.6ghz 420 series chip now.

There's a slightly faster Celeron 430, but I can't see it making much of a difference in practical terms. I ran my R60e with a 8GB SSD and a lightweight version of Linux. It seemed OK to me, but it had a T7400 and it was 10+ years ago.

might be better then to just sell this one and find an r60 with the touchpad and a better cpu to start upgrading... i could also get a t60 but they have graphics failures from what i've heard in certain models, and the awful rubber finish that's easy to scratch and damage that also turns sticky eventually. any real advantages to going the t60 route? they also seem to be way more expensive than an r60.
