Upgrading A20M

#1 Post by pbrehm124 » Tue Jul 26, 2005 8:24 am

I have an A20M I purchased new. I bought a new laptop. but want to upgrade the A20M for my daughter at college. Am I able to upgrade to Windows XP and Office XP? I can do it myself, but the college actually offered to do it for free, so I may let them do it. But I need to know if it's compatible asap.

Would you suggest any other upgrades other than RAM?

Thanks for your help!!

I also have an A20M (700Mhz Pentium III), purchased without an operating system. I had no problem installing XP Pro on it, I think I needed a couple of drivers from IBM's site but it was pretty much a by the numbers installation.

My Ultimate A20M upgrade

#3 Post by chalrie_hng » Fri Aug 12, 2005 4:59 pm

My 2nd A20M(2628-41U) just completed her upgrade as:

Up-to-date BIOS
Win98 -> WinXP Pro/Fedora 3 dual boot
Piii/700 -> Piii/900 (can go up to 1G but you have to stay in air con room)
128MB -> 512MB (don't ask, no more)
12G -> 60GB Hitachi 5K80(5400rpm/8MB)
CD-ROM -> DVD/CD-RW combo(derived from HP laptop)

I returned my first A20M to my brother-in-law who sponsored me for university and after a year or so I still missed it so I bought 2nd one on eBay. I did everything by myself and ever since she works like a champ. When upgrading hard drive, avoid Western Digital 8MB series since it had caused me some troubles before substituted by Hitachi. You can't ask more from her. Boy I would like to see your success and I have a lot of experience to share if you want to.

Upgrading A20M

Since the college is charging a fee for computer support, I brought it in to the them, and they have already upgraded it. Said that the ethernet card wasn't working, but the wireless card is. I need to get some ram and a computer lock, and then I think she is all set..

Thanks for the advice!!
