R52 LCD Panel brightness problem

#1 Post by rohit » Fri Aug 26, 2005 12:43 pm

I have just purchased a brand new R52 186032Q thinkpad laptop.I sold my earlier R50.
When I opened the sealed pack and started the machine, the FAT32 to NTFS conversion started which was totally normal. That time the display background was blue (that too normal).
But when the system started rebooting,I found a faint horizontal illuminated line at the bottom of the TFT screen just above (almost at the junction)where the LCD panel meets the black moulded structure. That remains in the taskbar. And there is a very light dark shaded area which covers say about half an inch where the clock's AM/PM remains.
When I open WORD that light grey are becomes prominent. If I make the desktop background color white then also becomes prominent. If I move the cursor I find it becomes brightly illuminated at the midpont of the taskbar while it becomes very little dull when I move it to the clock's area.
I know IBM servicing center may not agree to change the LCD panel as the problem is not a major one.But to me it's an annoying one.
I didn't get any such in R50.
I already tried the followings:
1.Chaged display resolution.
2.Updated BIOS.
3.Updated the video driver.

Is there any wayout to this annoying problem.

Have you tried to change color depth (from 32 to 16 bit) ? Looks like damaged video memory. In any case you should send it to the service.

Can't say !

Can't say what the problem could be. May be manufacturing fault
or mis handling issues. But not good ! I shocked to hear this post.
BM R52 is pretty stable series. I havent seen any posts regarding to
this problem or similar problem. I recommand to send ur laptop to
IBM service centre. They must replace it if its not more than 10 days
old. I hope IBM will give support for your laptop.

Waiting for reply,

Regards,
Amey.

I just saw today this kind of illuminating line at the bottom of the screen. My friend bought new R52 and the laptop has aldready been once in IBM service. They changed the panel but also said that this illumination is one kind of "attribute" which you have to live with it. This happened in Finland.

I'm also ended up my laptop searching to IBM R52 model and i'm going to order it soon, but this kind of problems doesn't sound too good. Also a little concerned about how to deal with this port replicator+dvi+viewsonic vp201 20'' 1600x1200 resolution thing.. :)

Is it an XGA display ? It looks like the quality of LCD panels used in ThinkPads is going permanently down. I've seen a T42 (XGA) recently and couldn't believe that there are such horrible displays in T series (very poor view angle, low contrast, bad colors ...). I could comapre it with Fujistu-Siemens Amilo 2000 (low-end models) next to it and its display was excellent comparing to the T42 one :-/

Was it the one which looks like Sony x-bright (with glass glare) ?

I would personally do everything I can to get rid of such a machine. This is not a good oven for the future. As an alternative, do not give up demanding that Lenovo corrects the problem. After all, you have a minimum of one year warranty and make sure to document your calls to them in case things do not work out to your satisfaction.

I also find the light grey area at the AM/PM section but it's not that annoying. Well, my lid is kinda loose and I don't know if it's common in thinkpads.
