A31p's LCD went blank; still can output to external display

#1 Post by danlimcy » Tue Sep 06, 2005 9:36 am

This morning shortly after I powered up my Thinkpad A31p, the LCD suddenly went blank and it has stayed that way ever since.

Fortunately when I connected an external monitor to the Thinkpad and use Fn+F7 to switch the display, I am able to direct the display to the external monitor and continue to use the Thinkpad.

Does anyone know what could the likely problem be with the LCD (is it dead and need replacement), and whether it can be fixed easily? I called IBM's technical support and was told that I need to leave the Thinkpad with them for about 3 business days for servicing, which right now I cannot afford because of tight work schedule.

Thanks.

how ironic... I had the same thing.

Though mine was fresh out the box from being serviced for the LCD. My nightmare is still continuing (though hope in sight):

Good luck on that. I've got a feeling yours is either the cable hooking the LCD to the MoBo is loose, or the backlight may be dead (any picture even a faint one?) Either way, call for service.

Many times when the screen goes dark the power inveter has failed. This is a small part located at the bottom of the screen (close to the battery & hard drive led's).

Do a search on ebay for 'thinkpad a31 inverter'. Have seen some for sale for less then $10. Check the documentation on IBM's website for part compatability.

Yup - Inverter or cable connection would be my guess.
