Wanted: Higher-resolution Zs!

#1 Post by Kenn » Mon Sep 19, 2005 2:14 am

First post? :D j/k.

I'm interested in hearing more about the Z-series, especially any announcements about higher-resolution screens for the 14" version. Let's at least get some WSXGA+ action going here!
IBM ThinkPad T42p (2373-7XU): 1.8GHz/1024MB, 15" UXGA, DVD-RW, 80GB, 2200b/g.
T42 (2374-3VU): 1.7GHz/512MB, 14.1"SXGA+, DVD-RW, 80GB, 2200b/g.

I agree, I would need a higher resolution on the Z60t's widescreen 14.1".

How come all the Z60t models listed in TABook is only WXGA 1280x768?

But what would be the optimal resolution that would be comparable in ppi with the 1400x1050 of the (non-widescreen) 14.1" of the T series? I'm thinking 1680x1050 would be slightly higher ppi?

Here's the lowdown on screen res for those who haven't heard yet.

WXGA is the only resolution for the Z60t in the foreseeable future. I personally know of no WSXGA+ 14" widescreen models AT ALL, and I don't see Lenovo adding a more expensive piece like that to a model that isn't expected have users who prefer high res screens.

The Z60m will also most likely NOT see a WUXGA screen. Again, this is because people who need high res screens (engineers, designers, etc) are not going to buy a Z60m; they will buy a T-series. I do agree that some people would prefer to use a 15.4" for a mobile workstation, but until they make a widescreen T-series I don't think you're going to see a 15.4" WUXGA.

Any other questions let me know...

Oh man, that's unfortunate indeed. We're needing to buy a new laptop and I was looking at the Z60t...

Other people already complain about the "paltry" 1024x768 XGA resolution on the 12.1" screen of the X series. Limiting the 14.1" widescreen of the Z60t to only 1280x768 WXGA is even worse (and one *I* would complain about too)!

BTW, how come the WXGA models for the Z60m on TABOOK is listed as 1280x800, is that a typo?

Nope. 15.4" screens with WXGA resolution are 1280x800. WSXGA+ = 1680x1050. WUXGA = 1920x1200(?)

Well, the HMM for the Z60m lists WSXGA+ LCD FRUs in it, so I'm assuming they'll be available at some point. The HMM for the Z60t only lists WXGA ones, unfortunately. Hopefully they'll offer a Z60t with higher resolutions in a later refresh.

I want a glossy display. After using a Sony notebook for a while, my T42P seems dull. :(

Personally I think the brightness of a Flexview display is nice, but the non-Flexview screens (which I believe all Z60t's are non-Flexview) are kind of disappointing.

I wouldn't mind seeing a glossy 14" widescreen discrete graphics Yonah thinkpad :D but I doubt we'll see that. Maybe when Lenovo introduces consumer-oriented models they'll be Thinkpad-based so we get the best of both worlds :)
