Thinkpad A31: What memory to use?

#1 Post by crg7 » Thu Sep 22, 2005 12:56 pm

Hello:

I have a Thinkpad A31 with 512MB (2x256) of RAM. Planning on upgrading to 2GB of RAM. The original RAM was PC2100.
IBM says it is ok to use PC2700. Is that it or can I use PC3200 or PC4200 RAM? I can get PC3200/PC4200 at a lower price than PC2700 and can reuse it in a later Thinkpad.
Please comment.

AFAIK the A31 will only support up to 1GB officially (2x512). There are 1024 sticks available, so you could in theory get up to 2GB, but I'm pretty sure that's unsupported as the system wasn't designed for that.

I recall reading in this forum that when the A31 was designed, 1GB sticks were not available. Anyway, I posted a question regarding this.

It *should* work... but it's officially unsupported, as in the chipset on the motherboard isn't designed or tested with 1GB sticks.

I would bet it would work, as I recall it being DDR Ram in the A31, but there is a small chance it won't (or may have some issues).
