IBM Bluetooth III with 56k Modem

#1 Post by a31pguy » Mon Sep 26, 2005 7:36 pm

OK,
Here is the challenge. Upgraded to an Intel 2200 BG and lost the WiFi/Modem card that came with the A31p. Just bought and installed the ActionTec Bluetooth III with/56k modem. The a31p uses a software modem (AC'97)- which the RJ11 essentially just plugs into the CDC card as a USB device. So instead of plugging into the wireless card - the RJ11 now plugs into the bluetooth card. Bluetooth works great.

My question: How does one get the 56k modem to work? I install the software the driver for the modem. Shows as an Agere AC'97 modem. But now I get a message, when performing a diagnostic in device manager, that the device hardware is in conflict. Are the drivers looking to hardware addresses of the mini-pci card?

Hardware settings:

IRQ11
IO Address: 2400-24FF
IO Address: 2000-207F
COM42

Found this site called linmodems which talks about the hardware. Perhaps that's the problem.

Looks to have been a bluetooth stack issue interferring with the com ports. Works now! :)

Off ebay. Search for Bluetooth III with 56k modem - but I also noticed that my previous bluetooth card had a modem connector on it too. You might want to look at your CDC cards to verify that you don't already have a modem connector on one. There should be two CDC slots and one mini-pci slot. Mine came with a mini-pci wireless/modem, a CDC ethernet controller (EDC), and a CDC bluetooth card. I swapped the mini-pci card and CDC card. You could also add a modem into the CDC (MDC) slot in place of the CDC bluetooth (BDC).

But configuration was tricky and not very plug and play. I suddenly went from Com 4 to COM42 at first.

hi A31pguy,

thanks for the reply, just got home and popped the door open. here is what i noticed:

top left: modem/ethernet slot ( currently being used )

bottom left : modem/bluetooth slot ( empty )

right middle: min pci slot with the 11mb (turtle card) and i assume the third wire is for the modem.

i tried to remove the first slot with the modem/ethernet and place the adapter into the lower slot...the ethernet port stopped and my wireless(turtle) took over.

so, if i change the mini pci with INTEL pro wireless 2200 card and add a bluetooth/modem adapter for the empty slot ( removing the modem wire from the mini pci card into the bluetooth) i should have everything working....i guess in a perfect world.

thanks for any advice

ps: nice setup with the hard drives.

You should search here on what's involved with upgrading to bluetooth when you didn't have bluetooth before. I think you'll need to add an antennas and a new clear plate on the lower half of the screen.

You could otherwise just put a modem cdc card (MDC) in the empty slot - if you don't want to do the bluetooth upgrade.

hi A31pguy,

thanks for the other suggestion, i thought i have the antenna already installed...probably not....was looking at the user guide and it may look like the antenna is near but if the screen needs a plate...then no, probably go with the modem add-on then, thanks for all of your help

a31pguy,

I have the same exact model you have(2653-n5u) and tried to move the RJ11 over to the bluetooth board with no success. Not sure that connector on the bluetooth board is for RJ11. As for the 2200BG did you need to perform the 1802 bios fix in order to get the card working?

Thx

Sorry to hear. It was just a thought on my original bluetooth card. Should work in theory - since it's just a pass through to a usb connector.

On the Intel 2200BG - nothing is needed to get it to work. No bios changes or hacks (including the tool you mentioned which I downloaded but never used).

You might consider the IBM Atheros A/B/G II card. It's got better support throughout the industry and not as many firmware/driver issues. The intel card has some issues with roaming and with extended distances (power saving mode).

I'm about to ditch the Intel 2200 BG in favor of the Atheros since some of my hacking tools don't work well with it (like Ethereal and NetStumbler) under windows.

Thx for the reply.

is this the card you are referring to??

Does this card need any BIOS hacks?
