CPU Upgrade on T21

#1 Post by PaulHappy » Fri Sep 30, 2005 5:33 am

Hello:

I recently purchased a used T21 2647-4AU. It has an 800Mhz PIII processor. I'd like to upgrade the processor and I see that PIII mobile processors are available on eBay up to 1.2GHz. I was wondering if there is an upper limit on the processor speed the T21 will support (less than 1.2GHz). Also, are all PIII mobile processors of the same ilk or are there variations, i.e. socket type, etc.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Paul

A PIII M 850 MHz is the fastest CPU that the T21 mainboard was designed to handle. Some people have reported that they are running 900, 950 and 1G CPUs in T21s. You will need a T22 fan for the faster CPUs.

Installing a 7200 RPM HDD with 8 + MB of cache will do a lot more for you. Also, 256 MB of memory may help a little.

There are a lot of threads in this forum on the topic. Do some searches and check these web sites:

Hello:

Thank you for the helpful information.

One thing I'm a little unclear about;

Would my ThinkPad take a MicroPGA2 processor or a BGA2 processor?

Thanks,

Paul

T21 came with Intel 440BX AGPSet; T22 - Intel 440BX AGPSet.

PIII M 1GHz 256KB 100MHz system bus is the fastest CPU that a T22 support.

T23 has Intel 830MP chipset and can handle the PIII M 1.2 GHz with 512KB L2 cache and 133MHz frontside bus.

Maybe your T21 will be fine with PIII M 1GHz 256KB 100MHz; anyway, put some Arctic Silver on the new CPU and for a while just monitor the temperature.
