unable to eject dvd drives

#1 Post by yawnmoth » Fri Sep 30, 2005 7:28 pm

I recently purchased an IBM ThinkPad R50e (1842-SUU) and can't figure out how to eject the DVD drive. On previous ThinkPads (a ThinkPad R40 - 2681-CU1) I could eject it by pulling a lever, of sorts, which would subsequently make another lever pop out. After pulling this lever, the drive would pop out. For the ThinkPad R50e, the initial lever is there, but nothing happens after pulling on it - no second lever pops out and neither does the drive.

Any ideas? :)

I ask because I have a lithium ion battery with the same from factor as the dvd drives that I'd like to be able to use in place of the drive from time to time. Unfortunately, I can't, as yet, really do this.

I'm not sure about the R series but the T series has an optional security screw which keeps the eject lever from popping out. Sort of a light security device.
Just remove the screw and the eject lever will come out to remove the drive.

One of the plastic bags the R50e came with had the screw that I assume you're refering to. There's an empty screw hole on the laptop, itself. However, I'm unable to eject, be it screwed in or not.

The R40's DVD drive, incidently, has two lights - one on the drive, itself, and one beside it. The one beside the drive seems to indicate whether or not the first eject lever has been pulled. The R50e has no such light. Also, I don't see any evidence of a second eject lever on the R50e - just the first one.

EDIT: The EasyEject Utility on the R40 shows the DVD Drive as being ejectable whereas the EasyEject Utility on the R50e doesn't. I guess this means that the R50e's drive can't be swapped out. That's unfortunate. Although that still leaves the presence of the first lever and of the bagged screw a mystery. Why would a drive that can't be ejected need any of that? Perhaps it can be ejected and I'm just missing something?

R50e doesn't have UltraBay. The drive looks like an UltraBay drive, but it can't be ejected. You have to remove the keyboard to remove the drive, and then you still can't use the UltraBay battery, since there's no connector inside for the battery.

The little locking screw is useless too, there's a hole, but it's just a hole, the screw doesn't go in there.

Does that also mean that I also couldn't use the DVD drive from the R50e in the R40?

Incidently, I found a video describing that which you described:

You can, if the R40 has the same Enhanced UltraBay. I worded my previous post incorrectly. The R50e doesn't have an UltraBay, but the drive itself is a normal UltraBay drive.
