T23 The best you can make it?

#1 Post by Thinkpadgranddad » Wed Oct 12, 2005 8:18 pm

Okay,guy's
What is the best upgrades that you can do;to a T23.If I were to end-up with one. That was lacking all the buttons.Sort of speak!!
All I ever see;is the T23's with windows 2000 Pro.I never can find the ones with windows XP home or XP Pro

I would mainly use my T23 for:Burning CD's
Email
Instant Messaging
Maybe watching a DVD (even now & then)

I'am a disabled diabetic.With very,very limited walking ability.So,wireless isn't a factor.I need 2.0 USB ports tho.For my printer & wireless mouse!

I want to know:What's the fastest hard drive;that can be put into a T23?
And what is the Max. Ram?
Where's the best place or places to buy IBM Thinkpad T23 parts & upgrades?

Thanks,Clint

First off a T23 does not have USB 2.0 so you will have to get a pcmcia card to have that. They do come with (2) USB 1.1 ports. That should be enough for your USB mouse & printer.
Some T23's came with WinXP or you can get an upgrade cd.
Many of them came with dvd drives but there are CDRW and Combo (cdrw+DVD) drives available.
A 7k60 or 7k100 drive (7200 rpm) will speed it up quite a bit. A T23 will accept all current 2.5 inch drives.
512 mb of ram should be enough for what you are doing but a full 1gig (Max) wouldn't hurt anything.
I'm still pushing for absoluteraleigh for parts & upgrades. Just ask him if he will put the upgrades in before he sends it.
T60 2623-D7U, 3 GB Ram.
Dual boot XP and Linux Mint.

Don't sell Windows 2000 Pro short. It is a very capable operating system. XP is prettier and you can get Media Player 10 with it as well, but otherwise I haven't seen a lot of differences.

Recommend Buying harddisk(7K100, 7K100 or 5K100 80GB), USB 2.0 PCMCIA card and ram from newegg.com. You can also order a IDE to USB2.0 line and DVD RW for desktop from there.

I have a T23 with 2*256 OEM. I would love to get two of the patriot sticks but the price is pretty steep. Would a patriot 512 and oem 256 stick work together? Since this ram isn't used anymore in new laptops is the price for these sticks gunna increase in the future?

TIA

Most likely. I have a Crucial 512 and Kingston 256 in my T23. Then again, there are a lot of weird RAM incompatibilities, especially with laptops. Buy from somewhere with a good return policy. Patriot and Kingmax are both available from newegg and have good reputations.

Hard to say. I wouldn't make a purchase today speculating about where prices will be later.

If you're using Win2k or XP, take a look at how much RAM you're actually using: ctrl-alt-del, Task Manager, Performance tab. I'm sometimes tempted to upgrade to the full 1GB but I just don't need it.

You can use 512MB+512MB PC133 SDRAM, or 512+256 PC133 SDRAM on T23. I do recommend you choose a 5K100 40-80G harddisk, faster.
