R52 questions (18494WU)

#1 Post by sr20de92 » Sun Oct 16, 2005 8:20 pm

Hey everyone. I'm close to purchasing a Thinkpad R52, in particular model 18494WU, and have a few questions. Here it is on NewEgg.com:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6834146089

And here it is on the Lenovo website:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... yle=lenovo

The main concerns I have involve the screen and optical drive. The 15" screen is SXGA+, and is not Flexview, correct? Can anyone personally comment on the quality of the screen? Common complaints seem to be that it's not very bright, with narrow viewing angles. Regarding the DVD drive: does anyone know the part number of the drive that's offered on this model of R52? I'm trying to find the exact read/write speeds this drive offers, but can't find it on the Lenovo site. Lastly, Newegg's price seems incredibly low for a Thinkpad with these features (DVD writer, 80 GB HD, 64 MB video card, etc.). Is there something I'm missing? Are there any inherent problems with this particular model of R52?

All opinions/advice are welcome. Thanks in advance for everyones help. This is my first Thinkpad, and I don't want to make the wrong decision!

may be you missed on the warranty

my 14" screen is not really good to watch a dvd (uneven lightning), i think 15" will be worse.

The warranty is only for one year (as opposed to three), so you could be right about that. Thanks for your thoughts on the screen. I understand that it won't be as good as a Flexview screen for watching movies, but does it seem bright/sharp enough for regular use?

Does anyone else have an opinion or experience with this model?

A 15" SXGA screen is quite good. I've personally used a ThinkPad that had this screen.
Current: 1. T400 - 14" WXGA+ LED - T9400 - 4GB DDR3 - 320GB HDD - Mobility Radeon 3470
2. T42 - 14" XGA - P-M 745 - 1.5 GB - 60GB HDD - Radeon 9000 - biometrics
Previous: ThinkPad T43, X32, X61, R50e

#7 Post by davidjjohn » Fri Apr 14, 2006 1:58 am

Have new R52 UJ3CLUK
15 XGA
Brilliant - actually found too bright - so turned it down a bit.

Have Mac as main G4 - love it and love R52 - windows seems fine to me

no great culture shock - as have not used windows before
Best wishes

David
