100GB travelstar 7100k compatibility w/ G41

#1 Post by katzray » Tue Oct 18, 2005 8:28 pm

Hello

I just bought a G41 model no: 288679U. CPU: P4/3.33Ghz, 512 RAM and 80GB 5400 rpm HD.

I am going to use it primarily for video editing and I would like to upgrade the hard drive before I actually begin using the unit to a Hitachi travelstar 100GB 7200rpm.

1) Is the Hitachi 7K100 hard drive compatible with the G41. Has anyone ever upgraded the HD on a G series with a hitachi hard drive. I have been reading that non IBM hard drives cause a lot of BIOS problems at least with the T series.

2) What is the difference between the 7k100 and E7k100. There is only a $2/- price difference between the two.

3) Are there anyother 100GB 7200rpm hard drives compatible with the G41?

advice highly appreciated...

E7k100 is a Serial ATA drive.
7k100 is a parallel ATA drive.

Unless you have a new z60m with serial ATA - you will be fine with a 7k100 drive. 2.5 inch form factor.

No, they're both available with serial and parallel interfaces ("Supports both Parallel & Serial ATA 1.5Gb/s interfaces").

The E7K100 is for server applications ("Designed for demanding applications requiring extended power-on usage") and doesn't implement all the power and noise reduction features as the 7K100, although I don't know what practical difference this makes. This "E" notation is common among Hitachi's product lines.

Seagate's "Momentus 7200.1" (who comes up with these names?) line has a 100GB model. Don't know about "compatible" though.
