Is the z60m for me....
Is the z60m for me....
I think so... Well.. I think I do! Lol. I'm after a laptop that I'll use religiously to play games, surf the net, general desktop type stuff, but while im doing stuff around the house (and out the house too.. but i'm not arsed about the size). I'd like something along the lines of 2.0ghz, 2gb ram, dvd+/-rw, 80gb (minimum, 100gb would be nice!) hd. Have been eyeing up the 2530-E9U and upgrading the internal ram.
Does this sound like a clever idea to you, or would you recommend going with a t43p or similar for my needs? (I will only buy ibm cos they rule...)
Also, if anyone knows when the Z-Series will be arriving on the ibmepp, let me know please.. Cheers.

You say you are going to do a lot of gaming. If that is the case, I do not recommend going with the X600.
ATI MR X600 GPU's have 4 pixel pipelines only, making it seriously deficient for new games. I would choke at thinking how well it would run a game like FEAR or Quake 4. Really if you're buying a notebook with the intention of gaming, you want an 8 pixel pipeline GPU or more. This mean something MR X700 or NVIDIA GeForce Go 6600 level.
Depending how much you want to spend, there are a number of options. The Asus Z71v 15.4" WSXGA+ has a 128MB GF Go 6600, nicely configured for ~$1500. The MSI MS-1029 15.4" WXGA has a 128MB X700 also for around $1500. The Acer Ferrari 4000 15.4" WSXGA+ has a 128MB X700 for $2000. The Acer TravelMate 8103 15.4" WSXGA+ has a 128MB X700 for <$1800.
If you want a Thinkpad for sure this is the best gaming model you are going to get. My review model arrived a couple days ago and I will have a First Impressions up on Monday. I may even throw in a couple 3DMark scores for fun

Have used just about every ThinkPad since the T42 days...
oooh, you can answer one question that has been bugging me then! Does the Z-series have the ThinkLight? I really hope so but it doesn't appear to have!
I just don't trust the price drop from t-series to z-series, would indicate that lenovo are using cheaper internals, which is the reason I like IBM in the first place, they use the best.. (hence the price!). no windows key on t-series though (and that's one handy) ! I am gonna have to give somewhere
(did look at vaios, but i like nipples too much!)

Not sure if that question is a joke but it does have a ThinkLight - unfortunately its the orange one that was on the R series and not the white one that is on the T series.wrboyce wrote:oooh, you can answer one question that has been bugging me then! I've been using the Z60t for weeks now and I love it. It is still very well built. I would say its pretty comparable to the T-series in terms of fit & finish. There are some little blemishes on the T4x's record anyway, squeaks here and there in the chassis and such. The same is present on the Z-series. I've only just took the Z60m out of the box, so I can't comment as much on that; but it looks to be a solid machine also. Big, but well built.

I posted my first impressions of the Z60m here:

What else would you like to know about it?
As mentioned in the link, I played HL2 @ 1680x1050 w/recommended settings (mostly high, no AA) and it was decent. Slowed down in some parts, but still fun as anything. Too bad there's no X700
