Where to find jumper to reset BIOS to factory settings? R51

#1 Post by gurkha » Sun Oct 23, 2005 7:28 am

Hi,

I have an IBM thinkpad R51 (Type 1830) and I need to reset the BIOS using a jumper (Believe it's called the "GAP" jumper). Where can I find the jumper inside my thinkpad, and how do I get to it?

All help greatly appreciated. :)

On another note, I searched for info regarding this or taking apart R51's/thinkpads in general, but couldn't find anything, so don't slap me too hard if this has been answered before. ;)

Try looking at your Hardware Maintenance Manual:

I can't help with locating the jumper, but if you told us what you are actually trying to do (i.e. why you think you need to reset the BIOS) we might be able to suggest a better way.

I need to reset the bios to be able to remove a supervisor password to be able to change the boot order, it's a school laptop (not stolen ;) ).

I've looked at other ways, and it seems that this would be the best bet.

Suggestions greatly appreciated though. :)

Resetting the BIOS will NOT remove a Supervisor password, only the Power On password. It will however, require you to ENTER the Supervisor password afterward to confirm the BIOS settings and reset the date and time, before it will boot.

Since you don't know the Supervisor password, you would need to bring it back to school, concoct a story about stray cosmic rays or something wiping out your BIOS, and ask them to fix it. When they were done it would still have a Supervisor password set, unless you could sweet talk the administrator into removing it for you.

Sorry, but be glad you asked the real question before you figured out how to clear the BIOS.

Can you use F12 to select a different boot device, or have they locked that out?

I have a related question. How do I set the BIOS so that F12 (select boot device) asks for a password? I already have a supervisor password set, but it only works for F1 to enter the BIOS settings.

Not sure - I never wanted to do that so I never looked, but I think it is possible - or at least possible to prevent users from changing the boot order. Probably in the BIOS under security or boot order.
