#1 Post by Thinkpadgranddad » Mon Oct 31, 2005 6:57 pm

I've seen alot of them for pretty cheap. At some ebay stores.
Pentium 3 900Mhz
14.1'display
20GB hard drive
but only 512MB max!
128MB installed

Only email,browse the web,instant messaging,and word proxessing
If you don't own a Thinkpad.
Then you're not thinking!!

I used a T22 since about 2002. Mine has the 1400x1050 display and a 1Ghz PIII processor. Its also very light and quiet.

The SXGA+ display starts out a bit orange these days - its ok once it warms up.

For web/email/word it performs just fine.

I'd recommend 512mb memory. (Btw, I'm running win2k.)

Fwiw, the 32GB 5400rpm hitachi drive in it has started clanking occasionally, and I'm in the process of upgrading it.

So that would be my main concern -- the display and hdd may fail.

T22s are fine for all but the most demanding applications and intensive graphics work. The downside to T22s is that the memory they take is quite expensive (around $50 for a 256mb stick). Upgrading to 512MB will help performance. No real reason to upgrade from Win 2000 to Win XP, although the machine will run either OS fine. Not positive about the HD, but you should be able to put in an 80gb drive no problem. All in all, a T22 in nice shape is a great buy these days.

Note that if you move up to a T23, you'll get a faster bus slightly faster processor (makes things a little zippier, tho not sure if noticably so), max RAM is 1GB (but not needed unless you're using something like Photoshop with huge files), and 2 USB ports instead of only one. But the USB is still just the slow version 1.

CompUSA recently had refurbed T22's for $399. I was sorely tempted, but held off because there was no mention of USB, and that was a deal-breaker. (I wasn't thrilled at the prospect of returning to Win98 after knowing how stable Win2k is, either.) Now I know better ... and I found this place while researching it. :)

I ended up buying a refurb T23 direct from IBM ... paid about $120 more out the door, but I'm happy. Now if I can just pick up a combo drive for it somewhere ...

Hmmmm, Combo Drive....Ding, ding, ding. Why not buy a Multi-drive capable of dual layer to boot?
www.newegg.com and look for the NEC ND-6650 for under $85. Here is the specific URL: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6827152048 You'll have to cut the front bezel, to fit the Ultrabay2000, but it works great!
If you get it, then go to www.cdfreaks.com and look up your drive in the forum section...you'll be surprised at what it can do and what firmware upgrades there are for it.

I have it's predecessor, the ND-6500 in my T30 and am very well pleased.

It could if you get an external drive enclosure.

Sorry for the late followup on this.. I havent kept up with the thread.

Mine is a 24679CU. (1ghz, 1400x1050 14." display.) I beleive the 9CU is without ehternet; I seperately added the mini pci card. My memory is IBM memory. Any memory most likely works - go for lifetime warranty.

I recently installed the hitachi travelstar 60GB 5400 rpm drive. (It came with a 32GB 5400 IBM travelstar). I had problems cloning, so instead I just installed winXP clean + ibm drivers and it seems to run just super.
Maybe better than win2k, which I thought would not be the case.
I suspect you could fit the 100GB drive in there. It just needs to be 12.5mm, or less, thick. (Btw, the new 60GB is 9.5mm thick, and the old 32gb was 12.5mm.)

No problems with the motherboard. (yet?)

The T22 has _one_ USB 1.1 port. I beleive T23 has two.
