A31p Screen Flicker / Brightness Problem

#1 Post by jchauvin » Tue Nov 01, 2005 11:06 am

I have an IBM ThinkPad A31p that has seen heavy use (sometimes on for 24 hrs/day) since it was purchased in Sept. 2002. Within the last year or so, dark spots (about the size of a quarter) have appeared in both the lower left and right corners of the screen. In addition, the screen brightness has slowly been decreasing over time. Yesterday, after being on for about 6 hours, the screen started to flicker. That is, the screen alternates between being brighter and dimmer than the normal brightness. There has been no damage to the unit (or spills) that might explain this problem. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks

Could be the power inverter is failing or the cable that connects the screen to the laptop is worn.

Hello. I've got the same problem (still quite unnoticed) on my R50p. These smal dark spots of the corners and decreased brightness ( in both sides )are concerning me. So, please keep us in touch about your problem's decision. Regards!

On my fairly 2001 (?) T22 I get some flicker when I first turn on the machine. Its barely noticable.

I also have the "orange/redish" screen (where it should be white) at startup, or wake from screen blank. After about 30 seconds white color is back to white.

Finally, there are some darkish spots (but not black - just reduced brightness) in the lower corners.

I suspect the backlight bulb is failing. These are like $10 on ebay but a PITA to replace. The inverter seems easy to replace, but if the display is not uniformily dim/out, then I suspect its the bulb and not the inverter.

Just my 2 cents.

I bought my R50p with 3 years warranty and 2 years remains. So I'm just asking to be informed. I don't want the service techs to tell me "it's usual, it's normal" and etc. Regards.

I'd send it in and get it replaced just before the warranty runs out.

I wish I did this with my t22. After the 3 year point (and out of warranty) it got worse.. i.e. more orange at startup.

Friends, the bad news is that the quality of all equipment drops down. I'm working as XEROX's service engineer and in our brand the situation is equal :? . "Made in China" is becoming as a plague. My first laptop is ThinkPad390 - without any problems regardless many drops, dust and etc.
