T30 1.60ghz to 2.40ghz CPU upgrade worth it?

#1 Post by chubes » Sun Nov 06, 2005 1:45 pm

Hello,

I'm trying to figure out if it would be worth it to upgrade my T30's CPU to a 2.40ghz from a 1.60ghz. How difficult is it to open the T30 to perform the upgrade? I just don't feel like buying a new laptop, and love the design of the T30.

Do I need to purchase more fans or different cooling mechanisms due to the increase in clock speed?

Also, what's the maximum amount of memory that can be seated into the Thinkpad T30? I currently have 255mb. Would two 1GB modules work?

From my experience the most bang for the buck performance upgrade is faster HD. If you can get a 7200 rpm drive and more RAM it will be more noticeable and more practical than CPU upgrade.

About the 2.4 GHz, P4-M CPU I would be concerned about the heat.

IBM/Hitachi and Fujitsu are good...maybe Samsung. Avoid Seagate and especially Toshiba HDD's. Toshiba's are by far the most crashed HDD's I've seen when our students bring me their broken laptops.

Memory 256MB and supports up to 1GB maximum memory

I do think upgrading to the Pentium 4 M 2.4GHz is a nice ugprade, but seen that prices go up to $500+....

Upgrading to a 80 GB 7200 RPM drive and to 1 GB total memory is cheaper and will boost performance.

kyrotech,

Have you had this upgrade done for the processor? If so, how much hotter did the laptop get? I actually want to do both operations, both mem+hard drive, and processor.

I opened my friend's T30 2 weeks ago to clean the CPU Fan. Please see the PDF manual of T30. Put off the harddisk first, then open the keyboard carefully, next do as the PDF manual to take off the fan. You can see the small CPU 1.6GB. You can change to 2.4CPU or highter 2.6CPU (2.4 is fast enough in my view). Very easy, don't worry.

As for the harddisk, I recommend you to use Hitachi 7K100 100G, or 5K100 60-100GB only. (some people around me bought Samsung harddisk 1 year ago, now as far as I knew, 60% has problems.)

Now you can upgrade memory to single 1G DDR266 (266 is enough, you can also buy DDR333, downgrade to 266 when it works).

You can also upgrade to 802.11a/b/g wifi card and BMDC200 bluetooth & Modem combo card.

Hope you enjoy T30!

Hello all,

wireless4laptop, you said:

Can you tell me what card will do this?
I thought there wasn't an internal "g" card for the T30. I don't think I know enough to mess with the BIOS, and I'm sure I'm not brave enough!

I don't have any wireless card in my T30 (2366-96U) now, but would like to get one.

Thanks very much for your help.

I was trying to replace a MDC with a BDC on my T30, but my original MDC has 2 pin connector, and the BDC01 has a 3 pin power connector, inserting a 2 pin cable into a 3 pin connector doesn't work. I'm wondering if wireless4laptop know how to solve this.
