T21 New XP Installation

#1 Post by uksteve » Tue Nov 15, 2005 4:41 am

Hi,

My younger brother has a t21 laptop that he bought of an auction website. The laptop was working fine but he formatted it and installed xp from the microsoft CD. Since this fresh install the machine has numerous problems, including freezing and blue screening.

It did not come with the IBM CD's or drivers and I am wondering if he needs to use an IBM restore CD to install properly. If so would anyone be able to let me know how I can get hold of one. I am more than happy to pay for it.

Steve

Are you using the genuine microsoft windows xp cd?? You don;t need the original restore cd. The drivers can be update via ibm website. Install the 'software installer' program to your thinkpad and it will automatically install all needed drivers.

If you're having problems with the Intel Pro/100 network card, you may want to install the driver off the Windows update website. I think it's found in "Hardware updates". The drivers and utilities from the software updater should cure any other problems.

uksteve,

I did something "similar" with a refurbished T-21 I bought that came with NO CD's or documentation, but with Win98SE already installed.

I wanted to set up the 20 gig HD as a dual-boot [10 gigs Win98SE & 10 gigs Linux]. I have a Win98SE [for computers without Windows] but I immediately realized that the Thinkpad had a lot more [power management & drivers, etc...] then is "normally" installed by the Win98SE CD.

So before, I Fdisked and formatted the HD I went to sites like this one -

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... IGR-4S5RRJ

I downloaded "everything" I thought I might need and burned these files to CD-Rs. There are many other related sites that you can download.

There are also sites for WinXP if you look for them.

Thanks for the links guys and the advice. I was trying to install the 3com drivers which might be why it won't work lol. They where the only ones I could find on the IBM website.

Cheers

Steve
