Transfer T22 harddisk to T23

#1 Post by ttan98 » Tue Nov 15, 2005 10:27 pm

I use to own a T22, recently I bought a second hand T23. The HD from T22 is a 5400rpm installed with XPpro. I like to transfer this HD to the T23, does anyone has any experience with this type of transfer.

I envisage I won't have many problems, on booting up the XP will detect a new CPU and motherboard, and eventually detect any hardware differences. I may have to use the XP original disc to install any new hardware. Does anyone want to dispute this before I try?

thanks

:)

I did this with a desktop once. I remember that before I removed the drive from the old machine I went into device manager and "removed" all of the devices. I figured that that way things would be a little cleaner when I booted in the new machine and the OS began recognizing and installing the new hardware. I don't know if this actually made any difference or not.

Anyway, should work, for you, at the worst you would have to do an XP repair afterwards.

Having said that, unless you have a lot of software loaded on your T22, why not just format the disk and do a fresh install of XP and reload your other software? That would be the "healthier" option, would get rid of the clutter that has built up in your system over time.

If you do that don't forget to copy off your favorites (bookmarks) as well as your Outlook Express mail boxes and address book. I've forgotten this before and could have kicked myself.

I've swapped HD's between several -21's, -22's, -23's, all with XP Home. None of them will boot normally until the hardware drivers are fixed.

The big thing about updating Windows to use the new hardare is copy all your data(documents, music, pictures, etc) into safe folders(outside of the Windows folder), or another partition so it isnt in anty folders that will be overwritten.

After you swap the HD into the new laptop, put in the XP disk, turn it on. Hit any key to boot from the CD. The installer ask if you want to repair the installation, answer NO. Go to the next screen, and do a re-install onto the same disk partition(if divided). Choose "Use the current format" (meaning don't format the drive). Win XP will then re-install, only changing/updating the driver files. The install will take the usual hour or so.

On restarting, you will get the pop-up that says your hardware has changed significantly and you must re-activate XP within 3 days. Do the phone call to Microsoft and follow the directions.

After you've done that, run the Win Update, install Service Pack 2 and do the other XP updates.

Good luck,

TJ
