T23: upgrade firmware for usb2.0/firewire support?

#1 Post by kita » Fri Nov 25, 2005 6:44 am

Hi there- got a nice old t23 and want to connect it to an external harddrive for back up. I know you can get firewire/ usb 2.0 pcmcia adapters, but if the motherboard bus is usb 1.0, will i get only usb 1.0 speeds?

If so, is there any software/ firmware (ie. not new motherboard) upgrade that I can make to get native firewire/usb2.0 speeds?

thanks

PCMCIA card

I updated my T23 to the lastest Bios, it was able to handle the above card with USB 2.0 interface. I don't see any reason why firewire interface would not work.

Update bios

#4 Post by ttan98 » Fri Nov 25, 2005 9:31 am

Go to this site:

http://www-3.ibm.com/pc/support/site.ws ... MIGR-57669

You can download software installer at the top of the page, install it, with it you can download all the T23 s/w you need from IBM, AUTOMATICALLY, niffy!!!. This includes, BIOS for T23 and many others. Go to IBM again to find instructions for updating yr bios, by the way you can update via Window XP, it is that easy.

With new Bios, and fast HD, 512Mb ram, it is very fast. I like my T22 and also my T23.

A bois upgrade will not allow you to transfer data at USB 2.0 speeds; you will still be speed limited unless you use a Cardbus (PCMCIA) adapter.

t23 bios upgrade and usb 2.0 support

#6 Post by kita » Sat Nov 26, 2005 5:38 am

thanks for the bios link- I'll follow that through and post back.

Just to reply to the previous post and check with the first-

I know that the pcmcia usb2.0 and firewire adaptor will 'work' ie allow conectivity.
What i wanted to know was how to make it support data transfer speeds higher than usb1.0, ideally at native 2.0/ firewire speeds.
I'm hoping that this is what the bios update will make possible. Could you confirm on this please? Thanks

using the latest Bios you should be able to get USB 2.0 speed from PCIMA USB 2.0/firewire interface card.

None of the upgrades to the BIOS mention anything about supporting USB 2.0.

edit:

@ttan98 - the question was, would the mainboard USB support USB 2.0, it's known that a PCMCIA would.

read my answer

read my answer carefully, you can get usb 2.0 from PCIMA card, not the T23 usb port if you use the lastest bios.

My believe if you don't use the lates bios you still can get usb 2.0 from the PCMIA card. T23 usb port gives only usb 1.1 whatever bios you use.
