IBM R50 video problem...

#1 Post by masdog » Sun Dec 11, 2005 3:31 pm

Hi everyone. I sent my R50 (model 1836-H7U) into IBM a month ago because I was having some motherboard issues. After the motherboard was replaced, I've started having video issues with SimCity 4 (screenshots at bottom of post).

Before coming here, I made sure my BIOS and Embedded Controller were up-to-date, installed the latest video drivers off of the IBM/Lenovo support site, and used both PC Doctor for Windows and DxDiag to see if there were any hardware or software errors (all tests passed with flying colors).

I haven't really had this happen with anything else that I do, but then I really don't use the video card for a lot on my system. The last time I saw anything like this was with my old A30 while playing several games, and it ended up that I needed a new motherboard because the video card or memory was bad.

Could I have a bad video card in the replacement motherboard?

Bad Video Power converter

#2 Post by meekers » Thu Dec 15, 2005 1:32 am

I had this same problem, although on my A31p. After a couple of service attempts they figured out it was a BAD VIDEO POWER CONVERTER (inside the Thinkpad). Not the video card, not the motherboard. On my system, problem was intermittent but occurred when system was on for awhile. It became more obvious in games, but also manifested itself just running Windows (although less obvious..) Hope this helps!

Hi meekers, was it fixed within the warranty by IBM? Was it a problem with the thyristor and was it easy to fix? I have a similar problem with an A31, but it's out of warranty...

The problem only arises while playing perticularly this game or
in normal use also?
