How to accomodate a UK-TP-A31P for use in Germany ?

#1 Post by friedrich-eugen » Sun Jul 11, 2004 4:50 am

Hello,

after having successfully acquired a A31P in good shape (2 Ghz, 512MB,60GB), but with XP-english Version as Preload,
how can I manage that while restoring from scratch XP chooses to install the German Version (keyboard has been exchanged)??

A restore via F11 from the hidden partition does not ask for the language to be used while installing. Does IBM use language-specific preloads?

Will I have to ask IBM for a German-language-recovery-CD?

Any help or tipps how to do would be highly appreciated

Friedrich-Eugen

You can't change Windows' language, but you can change the keyboard layout to German in Control Panel>Date, Time, Language, and Regonal Options>Regional and Language Options>Language tab. You can set German as default. You don't need the CD because the necessary files are already there. By the way, when XP first starts (after a fresh install) you can choose the region and language (keyboard).

Thank You, G-Man, all possible changes have been done/tried .

I just wonder, whether IBM uses a preoload that is "country/language"-specific or not. If not, there should be some chance of telling the script-/batch-process not to go for the English but the German version of Windows(XP).

ALternatively I might ask IBM for a German Version of the Preload, but I fear, they will not help me along.

If so, I'll have to use a "full" and new version of XP instead of that coming along with that A31P. This will not only use licences but also implies extra work (adjusting the XP to IBM-TP).

Any Advice still very much appreciated and very welcome

Unfortunately the preload is country/language specific. Moreover IBM Germany won't give you a German Recovery CD set. If you happen to have a friend with a German version of A31p, he/she can call IBM Germany and order a Recovery CD set, or some German folks around here might have one.

You can install Windows XP (generic) without any problem. Just make sure you save the IBMTOOLS folder, because it includes some applications that are not downloadable from IBM (DVD player, CD burner). You can also save the DRIVER folder, but all the drivers are available at IBM.com.

Well, G-Man,

thanks, that is what I feared to hear ... (read) ...

I fact I do have a recovery-set for the A31P (mine), but it is a Windows 2000- one and not a Windows XP-one . The A31P for my wife is a later modell.

So indeed, I'll have to look for a German-Recovery-CD, containing XP.

Thank You very much
