Thinkpads rock.

Mine fell about 7 feet from the top of the fridge to the hardwood kitchen floor and it did pretty much absolutely NOTHING to it. A screen hinge plastic cover had a very small crack but that was easily fixed with some superglue and it popped right back on.

The original "user opinion" on Cnet:

http://reviews.cnet.com/ThinkPad_Z60t_2 ... &tag=uolst

Sounds pretty unlikely... for starters all the Iraqi insurgents I've seen on the news have been toting AK47's not Berettas - perhaps it was friendly fire rather than enemy fire

Anyone want to shoot a Z60m w' Titanium lid to see if this is plausibile?

I find this story hard to believe. As strong as Titanium is, I don't think a thin LCD display cover will stop pistol rounds.

The thinness of the titanium coating is such that it can stop scratching but not projectiles so this is nonsense - the timeframe of the original post doesn't make sense either.

Don't get me wrong ThinkPads are tough - i've dropped a few from fair heights with minimal damage but I really think if you needed a notebook in a warzone you would at least opt for a tough book.

Thinkpads are tough, but not bullet-stopping tough.

Sounds like BS to me.

Whether the story is true or not, I couldn't say. But there are a couple of things to consider. How far away was the shooter? If the bullet was a hollow-point (to inflict maximum damage to tissue), that would make the bullet less penetrable. Was the laptop in a laptop case or was it out in the open?

I wonder though if a closed ThinkPad T4x could stop a slow, low caliber pistol round. The LCD lid is magnesium alloy, which is hard but fairly brittle compared to steel and aluminum. A bullet would probably cause the magnesium alloy panel to crack or shatter. I'm pretty sure the keyboard and system board would also go to pieces. I wonder if these components are hard enough to cause the bullet to shatter, and if the carbon fiber composite base is strong enough to catch the fragments.

Not something I'm willing to test, but if someone wants to put a 9mm round through a T4x that is beyond repair, I'd be interested to see the results.

Well, even mostly all Thinkpads when initially build have to pass some rougher torture tests, see for example...

...I pretty much doubt that shooting on it's display covers is or would be part of those torture tests. :)

I wonder if they are checking for fan noise in the soundroom?

Obviously they will check sound and overall noise levels under different conditions there.

Things like the fan noise can also change slightly during the life time of specific Thinkpad series, since the overall fan behaviour is adjustable/settable via firmware/BIOS updates inside some parameters.

However, all in all the fan behaviour as part of an overall thermal notebook design depends on a bunch of aspects...

- the quality of the supplied fan itself (some produce more high frequency/pitched sounds etc.)
- rotation speed, amount/ratio of air they can handle
- if the fan is decoupled/absorbed from the chassis, so it doesn't make much resonance and noice emissions
- internal temperature sensorings
- overall functional way of heatpipe design
- the art of firmware/software controlling
- ...and so on...

So there are many things to take into account here and some of these are by no means trivial.

I know... :)

...but I wanted to give a serious answer, so that other people might understand and see, that it is no trivial part to implement a well working fan behaviour in general which meets the specs of a specific notebook design.

I told my Lenovo rep about this and he said they know about it & are looking into it to see if it is true, LOL

Next thing you see in a Thinkpad ad...;)

Z60t Black Cover

#15 Post by amitra » Sun Jan 08, 2006 3:38 am

i guess the Z60t black cover is a flimsy ABS sheet of plastic, a sort of stop gap solution quite contrary to the magnesium cover on a T42 / 43. Infact the panel gap is quite uneven and i can insert my nails where the cover joins the screen borders, and peek into the internals

Did you know Lenovo is investigating this to see if it is true? :) If you want I can put you in touch with the right people to verify it, I'm sure they'd love this in some PR!
