Buying new laptop for under $1000

#1 Post by Jackal30 » Wed Dec 28, 2005 1:15 am

I am buying a new laptop for my girlfriend and don't really want to spend more than $800-$1000. She only needs it for really basic use, such as web surfing, email, office apps...no gaming or heavy multimedia. Was thinking about going with the R50e linked here:

Is this a good deal for the specs? Is there a better thinkpad for what i need it for? Am i better off going with a Dell Inspiron B120 which is only $550 since she only needs it for basic use? Thanks.

Yes, and this looks like a good ThinkPad.
ThinkPads: R51 (1836HAU), T41 (23737FU), 600 (264551U), T60 (2008VRQ), T500 (224255U)

I Love (all) ThinkPads...ThinkPad forever!

The R50 you referenced does not have a touchpad. See comments here: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=18302

The R50e also doesn't have hot swap UltraBay, no hard drive active protection (APS), and uses the 855GM chipset (266 MHz). But it's built like a R51...

Too bad you just missed out on the "IBM Employee Pricing" sale that just ended on 12/27. You could have gotten her an R51 for $949 or a T42 for $974.

Yes, but after buying this laptop you can still fill in the $100 rebate on Lenovo's site, I believe. All it requires is purchasing a listed model (like this type 1842) and that Newegg be an approved Thinkpad retailer (which it should be).

Try to find something that's relatively portable. I would say 6 lbs is the max.
Microsoft Surface 3 (Atom x7-Z8700 / 4GB / 128GB / LTE)
Dell OptiPlex 9010 SFF (Core i3-3220 / 8GB / 8TB); HP 8300 Elite minitower (Core i7-3770 / 16GB / 9.25TB)
Acer T272HUL; Crossover 404K; Dell 3008WFP, U2715H, U2711, P2416D; Monoprice 10734; QNIX QHD2410R; Seiki Pro SM40UNP
