A22M crashes

#1 Post by richk » Sun Jan 01, 2006 3:45 pm

I have a friend's A22M that I volunteered to try to fix. I have never worked on an IBM laptop before. The problem looks to me like overheating. The crashing is intermittent - sometimes it runs all day; sometimes it runs for a minute. I opened the case to see if there was dust around the fan, but it looked clean. I pulled the fan and reseated the heat sink using Artic Silver, and according to speedfan, the temperature dropped 4 degrees (from 51 to 47 C) Speedfan, doesn't seem to be able to read the CPU temperature, because the only temperature sensor it reports stays constant, even when I run a piece of software to exercise the CPU. I have never heard the fan come on, and when I asked the owner, she said that she doesn't remember hearing the fan ever. (I am used to a Toshiba that sounds like a 747 when the fan comes on) Is there any way to test the fan? Do you think the fan is the problem? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Rich
