Swap/Upgrade entire motherboard+cpu+gpu?

#1 Post by optionalG » Wed Jan 11, 2006 6:42 pm

Since I am required to purchase a Thinkpad (our IT guys don't want to support anything else, :) ), I went with the z60m (2529EAU).

Since I do play a little bit of CS:S, I wish the z60m came with a gpu that is better than X600...

...so, I'm wondering:

Scenario:
When newer models of Z60m comes out with better graphics card (let's say X1600), do you think it is possible to easily order and swap out the internals? I understand the gpu is hard wired to the motherboard, and was wondering if it would be possible to easily swap out the entire module.

Why couldn't they just make the gpu swappable...
...I guess it would cause more support issues if it was allowed.

Sigh.

LOL - those new laptops that were announced yesterday are going to take some serious time getting to market. Announced doesn't mean shipping. It just means that all the manufactuers are rattling their swords.

10-1 apple isn't going to be ready with it's new laptop for software reasons alone. Intel is ready with the hardware but not all of the apps work on OS X.

The new thinkpads are announced - but you'd be challenged to find a shipping model any time soon.

Be happy with your new z60m - it's not a bad machine by far.

Yeah, I am unwittingly mobed by all the marketing storms...

Waiting for the z60m to ship (ordered on Dec 20, 2005)...
Looking at all the marketing hype...
Crap!

(3 more years and it'll still be the same cycle...)

I must confess, I am enjoying this "limbo period" (time without a laptop) by going thru this great forum and reading all the threads. :)

I noticed on Z60M parts, CPU exists as a separate item.

Can this be upgraded down the road with higher one or even Core Duo?

Nope; as far as I know, the CPU Sockets are different, they got changed yet again going to Dual Core.
