Just bought an R52 for $100...

#1 Post by scrible88 » Wed Jan 11, 2006 8:51 pm

I just purchased a Thinkpad R52 with a 1.73ghz Centrino, A/B/G Wireless, 40g hard drive, DVD/CDRW combo, 14 inch screen, 512mb RAM for $100 basically brand new... 4 charge cycles.

It was bought by the school system, given to a teacher... basically to make the long story short it was sat on... cracked screen about an hour after taken out of the box and not used since.

$100 and it was mine. I am a student and the tech department was trying to get rid of it. I have the box and everything that came with it... unopened. The power adapter hadn't even been unrolled yet. It still has the clear plastic coverings on the plastic pieces and stuff.

Here are the specs:

Type 1860-2YU

S/N L3-A1782

Product ID: 18602YU

Lenovo Singapore copy of XP Pro. I will get some pics up soon. It is and looks brand spanking new, until you open it and see the cracked screen.

What do you think?

Once you are the world of parts, roughly, $thinkpad(total) - $screen(replacement) = 0

Price a new screen from IBM, then see if you can get one off eBay. See if it makes any sense. Brand new, it probably does, but new screens are exceedingly pricey.

Well, I know that the screen is the major component, that is why the school didn't replace it. Too pricey.

It works great as a destop plugged into an external monitor. You couldn't get a desktop with those kind of specs for that price.

I'm guessing I could part it out for well more than $100 though. That's the reason I bought it. I was not planning on buying an LCD, that wouldn't be smart unless I could find one for 200-ish.

I think parting it out would be the best thing to do. Probably could pull a profit.

Lenovo Singapore? Did the ThinkPad come from Asia? In many parts of Asia ThinkPads are sold with insurance. Someone I know dropped his ThinkPad into the sea and Lenovo replaced it for free.

If you are going to take it apart for parts, then you might as well just replace the LCD. It appears to take the same 14.1" XGA LCD that works in the T40-43 and the R50-51, such as this one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/IBM-THINKPAD-T40-T4 ... dZViewItem

I forgot to add that what gets really expensive is when you try to replace the entire display, not just the LCD. The LCDs are very popular, whereas the specific casing for the R52 might be next to impossible to find.

Wow... If I could get a display for 100-ish that would be awesome. The whole screen housing, etc is perfect. Just the screen is cracked.

No, it was bought through the school here in Kansas, USA. Ordered direct from IBM.

The ad posted doesn't appear to be a compatible display. IBM service parts lists FRU 92P6759 for a Samsung LCD and FRU 92P2664 for a Hydis. The ad lists P/N#s 11P8350, 11P8352, 11P8354, and 92P6675.

I'm typing from the R52 right now. I really like it... except for the cracked LCD of course. The Centrino is zippy and the wireless works great.

I am using it as a desktop with an external LCD right now. If I cannot find an LCD in a short amount of time this system will get parted out. I am in need of $$$ for a new (new-used) small block chevy 350 for my car. Mine 327 has a bad valve guide and is getting oil into the cylinders.. isn't running too great :P

How much do you guys think I could part this thing out for? Considering it is brand new pretty much? 4 cycles on the battery. Do you think I would be able to sell it as a whole for a reasonable price?

:P

I wish there was a way to pull this 14.1 inch LCD in a 770e I have here that needs a new mainboard and put it in this R52. From the outside they look like they would be perfectly compatible, but I know that is most likely wouldn't work at all.

No way I could make that work right? The 770e is never going to get fixed, so I wish I could do it.

Even though I know it is unlikely it can't hurt to ask!

Okay, I'll throw in a 770 mainboard with my $200 offer. :)

How much do you guys think I can reasonably get for it?

200... haha

I'd rather keep it as a desktop plugged into an external monitor/keyboard/mouse than sell it for 200

That 770 has some major cosmetic issues too... It should just be thrown away (but it isn't going to be of course).

How about if you just give it to me (if you decide to give it away, I love ThinkPad's and I would love to get an R52 and if I can I would replace the screen).
ThinkPads: R51 (1836HAU), T41 (23737FU), 600 (264551U), T60 (2008VRQ), T500 (224255U)

I Love (all) ThinkPads...ThinkPad forever!

Does that mean you don't want a decent 770 base cover, screen cover, and keyboard? 100% cash profit + ??% with no effort or hassle parting out, getting paid, etc., allowing you time to put the motor in your car...

I guess that is true.

I am on it right now btw.

I will think about it. The 1.73 ghz Centrino is a fast chip. I'm thinking about swapping this hard drive with my x22's because my x22's is going to hell on me.
