R51 does not hibernate/standby after memory upgrade

This is my first post here. I have scoured the internet looking for a solution but I can't find anything relevant. I hope I can find some help here.

I have an R51 (Celeron 1.4 GHz) with 256MB RAM. I used standby/hibernate features often.
I bought another stick of compatible 256MB RAM and added to the laptop, so total RAM is now 512MB (504MB reported in XP, I guess because of shared memory for video card).
Everything works fine except that I can't hibernate now, or standby anymore.
When I try to hibernate or standby, it says "preparing to standby/hibernate" and stays there forever.
I tried changing the swap file size but that didn't help.
Nothing changed in the software/hardware except for the memory upgrade.

I hope someone here knows how I can fix this.

Will it suspend/hibernate if you remove the new RAM? What about if you remove the old RAM, leaving the new in? Just for grins, you might want to go into the BIOS setup and make sure it's configured to allow suspend/hibernate. I know you said you didn't do anything, but I recently had some options in my BIOS change and I hadn't made those changes.

Your BIOS comment gave me an idea, which was to update my BIOS and Embedded Control Programs to the latest versions. I just did that. I still have the same problem.

My T30 has some suspend/hibernation settings in the "power" config. YMMV

How much free hard drive space do you have?

4 GB at least.

Well from your description it sounds like you don't have enough free space on your hard drive to hibernate 512mb, but you do for 256mb.

Maybe you have your Virtual memory set too high under the performance tab of your system properties?

Is the 4gb of free space on your primary (C:) partition?

Yes I do have 4GB on C.

I just gave up and reinstalled XP, getting rid of the standard installation that came with the laptop. Now it works like a charm!! I took the easy (but time-consuming) way out I guess.
