PCMCIA Slots.

#1 Post by BoomAM » Sun Jan 15, 2006 4:52 pm

Hi.
This may be a daft question to some of you, so please bare with me...
On my Z60m, there are 2 PC Card Slots on the right of the machine, each with eject buttons, out of curiosity, i pressed them both down, and the upper one, with the X on it, which i presume is the PCI-E type of one, the button popped out as if i was gonna push it back to eject what would be in there. I pushed it back in normally. Now though, i cant get it to do the same again. It isnt broke is it?

I don't wish to bare with you, but I will be happy to bear with you (sorry, I could not resist :) )

On any machine I have had, if the slots are empty, you can push in on the buttons and they will pop out. If you push them back in, you can feel the click. Then you can pop the buttons right out again.

So if you truly cannot pop the button out, it may be broken. The slots (on any machine I have had) are separate from the motherboard and can easily be replaced. First, gently try pushing in and letting the button spring out. ... JD Hurst

They wont pop out at all with nothing in them. They stay flush with the rest of the casing and can be pushed in 2-3mm, but they dont pop fully out at all.
The only thing i can think of is that the 'action' on them is dependant on if something is in the slots. As some similar mechanisms can be 'tricked' until they are used properly. The only problem is that i dont have a PCMCIA Card or ExpressCard to check with. I dont plan on using either to be honest, but i'd prefer them to be working.
They look fine internally, nothing looks out of place.

How easy would it be to fix if it was broke?

##EDIT##
Interesting.
The upper slot, the ExpressCard slot, internally has a catch that appears to get pushed backwards once a card is inserted. If i push it back myself with a screwdriver, to simulate a card being inserted, i can then use the button for that slot. It'll then pop out, and then allow me to push it back in, forcing the catch to revert to its original state.
Now, i cant see the same catch on the normal PCMCIA slot, but i'd asume it uses a similar mechanism. Indicating that the ability of the buttons abilities to force the PC Card out/pop out the buttons, is dependant on what is in the slot.
