A30 No character with first keystroke

#1 Post by sno-twister » Mon Jan 16, 2006 4:21 pm

I have done a search on the forum but have not found a similar topic for this issue.

My A30 after sitting idle (screen saver appears) for several minutes, and then resumption of use by moving the mouse, the first keystroke of any key will not display a character. The cursor will blink where ever I put it, such as a word document or web address but the first actual keystroke displays nothing. Is this a Windows issue, Thinkpad issue or system setting? I'm running Windows XP Pro. Thanks.

I believe it is a Windows issue. Once you resume the window you were in needs to regain focus. If you click in the window your first character should show up.

At first I had thought it was a Windows issue, but none of my other PC's running the same OS have this problem, just my laptop. It is almost as if the keyboard is asleep apart from the rest of the system. Clicking the mouse in any window or web address does nothing. For example, entering www after the system is idle, actually requires four (4) keystrokes. This is only after it has sat idle, after the initial "wake-up" everything is fine until it sits idle again. It is really more of an annoyance, but I wanted to see if others had the same issue.

That's interesting - I've had that issue for a long time, but never bothered checking if anyone else had the same. I can tell you it's the same in Linux and Windows on my A30. Given that, it's likely a driver problem, but it seems to only apply to A30. Could someone else with this model confirm or deny this being the case?

Also, I don't know if this person has an A30 or not, but here's someone with a similar problem on a Thinkpad:

Would greatly appreciate a word or two from other A30-owners!

I've seen this kind of behaviour put into screensavers (in particular, xscreensaver) on purpose: When you deactivate the saver with a key press or mouse click, you might not know exactly what window will receive this event, and how it might react.

cheers,

Nah, this has nothing to do with screensaver, it happens long before any screensaver kicks in. I'm guessing it's firmware problem of sort since it happens in both Windows and Linux. If it was a driver or other software problem, likely is I wouldn't experience the same effect in both OSes.

Hi,
I think I figured out how to solve the problem. It seems very simple.
I just entered BIOS and loaded the default setting, then reboot the computer. You know what? The keyboard works again.
