New R40 user: XP reinstall, drivers, upgrades

#1 Post by Chiana » Mon Jan 23, 2006 1:03 am

Hello. I just purchased an R40 off ebay for $500 (I think its a good deal). I want to reinstall windows XP Pro on it (used machine, fresh install, etc). The current owner threw away/lost all the orginal CDs in the move. What drivers/utilities will I need?

Also, what can I upgrade the processor to? It currently has a 2ghz processor.

Congrats on the R40, very nice machine with strong battery.

There are a lot of posts on how to do this and about cpu upgrades, use the search function.

Update Windows with SP2, etc. Then run IBM's driver update utility. Here's the link;

If you have the 2GHz P4, you should be able to go to 2.4GHz or possibly 2.6Ghz.

But remember, as you keep adding to the cost, you could have had a faster, more current R51, R52 or T4x.

Good luck.

Thanx. Everything is up and running with the exception of a standby problem. Its quite speedy with the 2.0Ghz, so I dont' think I will be changing the processor soon. plus I am afraid that a faster processor will give me lower battery times.

Two years we got my mother a T40(or is it 30?). I liked its build quality, and features. So, I decided to look for an IBM when I needed one and I picked up an R40. It actually seems to have a better build quality then the T. So far I like it, I just need to get that one bug figured out. The keyboard is lovely

I've had to wipe my disc and re-install XP but I can't get the wireless network to work. I assume I need the driver downloads but when I use a different computer to get them it doesn't let you. Is there anywhere else that these canm be downloaded from?

I went here (linked from a link further up on this page) http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... estyle=ibm

and I downloaded the Software Installer, which then installed a bunch of updates for my programs. It also installed the Recovery program.

Ever since these updates, my computer has taken a loooooong time to start up, at least a couple minutes pass after I type my password in at the logon screen before explorer loads. Any ideas?
