Processor upgrade; R40

#1 Post by Petey » Mon Jan 23, 2006 1:29 am

I have an R40 with the 1.8ghz celeron, can I swap that processor out for a 1.8ghz Pentium 4?

You wouldn't notice the little bit of difference going from Mobile Celeron to Mobile P4-M of the same speed. In the benchmarks I've performed and read, there is only about a 1% difference in performance for the same speed CPU. You can upgrade upto Mobile P4-M 2.6 GHz. Those CPUs are running about $300 used on eBay, 2.4s about $150, 2.2s about $100. You could also stay with Celeron and go upto 2.4 (actually there is supposed to be a 2.5 Mobile Celeron but I've been unable to find the sSpec code for it). You can buy new Celeron 2.4s for $75 shipped, even less for used. You'd get more battery life with the P4-M but how much I don't know, not terribly much I suspect.

is there a chart somewhere for what R40 cpu upgrades I can look for on ebay, I have the same cpu (celeron 1.8)
Machine info: 2682-NU2.
I wouldn't mind keeping an eye out in case something good comes along.

I think the battery life will be noticably longer. The Intel SpeedStep feature on the Pentium P4-M chips is excellent (esp. compared to older Celeron's).

Remember R40's had 8 cell batteries, so a power savings is amplified over a lot of capacity.

R40's with Pentium M's (not that this system board can accept one) had fantastic battery life.

Regarding performance, none you would see for similar speed cpu.
